PAR

ARSON JAQUES, AND HIS CHIPS AND CHATS. By J. O. KEEN, D.D. "Parsons and people may alike profit by reading this lively little work. The Chips and Chats are very amusing, but Parson Jaques has his head on the right way, and his heart in the right place, and is a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. True to its title, the book is fragmentary, and many pages are fascinatingly funny. Whoever needs a few recreative hours can find them, and extract profit from them, in fellowship with Dr. Keen's clever and acute little 'Parson.'-Methodist New Connexion Magazine.

ILLER MANNING: A STORY OF CORNISH LIFE. By MATTHEW 1s. cloth boards.

"Au admirable little book from beginning to end. Let all who want something at once profitable, refreshing and racy, get it. Our good friends the Bible Christians are to be congratulated on their success in so happily preserving such sketches of original characters. .. The story is well told, in a simple and straightforward style, and is rigorously confined to the man himself, without any moralising or reflections such as often swell the pages and annoy the reader. There is not a page to be skipped or skimmed."-Rev. M. G. Pearse, in Wesleyan Methodist Magazine.

CONSUMPTION

AND ALL LUNG DISEASES.

By G. T. CONGREVE, Coombe Lodge, Peckham.

The Nature, Progress, and True Treatment of this Scourge of England.

The following Cuses are selected from the FOURTEENTH SERIES.

PHTHISIS.-CASE of Miss M. A. McDONALD, MORTLAKE.

This case was first brought under my notice in September last by the recommendation of the Rev. C. W. Marshall. The following are the leading particulars of the case, from memoranda in my Patients' Book:

"Mother had died of Asthma and sister of Consumption."

"Illness commenced with a cold three years ago, which had resulted in affection of the lungs gradually increasing."

"Cough now very violent, with expectoration of thick, heavy phlegm, sometimes green, sometimes streaked with blood; fluid blood sometimes raised."

"Acute pains in side and chest, hectie flushings, inordinate action of the heart."

"All the secretions unhealthy, and other symptoms indicative of disease of the lungs." "Gradual loss of flesh in the face, chest, arms and hands, and strength gradually declined." The patient had been to Richmond Hospital, also to Brompton, without benefit-under treatment for Phthisis.

There was not much visible benefit from my advice for several weeks. A belladonna plaister was ordered to allay the irritability and pain in the region of the heart; but in less than two months there was a great improvement in every way. Three months since I received a letter, in which she says:

"I am convinced there is no other treatment that is equal to yours. I did not like to write and say I was well till quite sure of it; but I have felt nothing since the end of the year, although the weather has been very trying. I am now enjoying as good health as I can wish.'

PHTHISIS.-CASE at RISCA, NEWPORT.

The patient's name is Miss FANNY FORWARD. The correspondent was her brother, Mr. WILLIAM FORWARD, CROSSKEYS, NEWPORT. I received the statement of her case from him in May of last year. At that time she was so reduced she could scarcely turn in bed; the expectoration was highly purulent and profuse in quantity, the cough severe and exhausting.

In five weeks' time she was able to get up every day and to take a little out-door exercise, the appetite improved, and all her symptoms decreased.

In another five weeks her brother reports :--" She continues to get better; she has been sounded by two doctors, and the opinion of both is that disease is much less.

[ocr errors]

On the 24th of September:-"I am happy to tell you that my sister has become much stronger and is gaining flesh fast. Her appetite is very good; cough better now; breathing a little short; We intend her to follow your treatment until thoroughly well."

She continued accordingly until the winter had past. In the early spring she was entirely well, and her brother, after waiting a month or two to see what effect the winter might have, writes me: My sister is quite restored, thanks be to God for blessing the means. I waited to see if she continued well. We shall be ever grateful; you can make what use you like of my testimonial.”

TESTIMONIALS.

INTERNAL WEAKNESS.

Miss M. HUDSON, Twyford, Derby, writes:-"March 20, 1885. Seven months ago I purchased one of your Electropathic Belts. I have worn the Belt every day since that date; it has been an untold comfort to me. I would not be without one, and cannot say enough in favour of your Belts; all I regret is that they are not better known. I shall be glad to write to any lady who may wish to hear more particulars respecting my case, and shall certainly recommend your appliances to my friends."

RHEUMATIC GOUT.

Major PAKENHAM, Longstone House, Armagh, writes: "Feb. 23, 1885.-I am very happy to inform you that the Electropathic Belt which you supplied me with has completely cured me of the Rheumatic Gout, from which I had suffered such intense agony for nearly two years, and I now feel as strong and active as I ever felt in my life.
