and to maintain fuch a conduct through life, as may lay a foundation for the hope of an happy immortality, through thy great mercy in Jefus Christ our Lord. Amen.

OUR Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; Give us day by day our daily bread; and forgive us our trefpaffes, as we forgive those who trespass against us: And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

The Exhortation.

HAVING folemnly engaged to educate this your child in the principles of religion and virtue, I seriously and earnestly exhort you to remember, that the wisdom of providence hath made the happiness or misery of this infant to depend, in a great measure, upon the manner in which you shall dif

charge

charge this most important duty. Train him up, therefore, in the way be fhould go, and when he is old he will not depart from

it.

And, in the first place, lay the foundation of his future happiness in the love and fear of God, which is the beginning of wisdom. Inftruct him early in the knowledge of the Christian Religion, as revealed in the facred Scriptures, which contain the words of eternal life. Attend, with the utmost diligence and care, to the various workings and propenfities of his tender mind; cherish in it the feeds of humility, kindness, and generofity; labour to fubdue all pride, malice, and envy; teach him betimes to govern his appetites and paffions, by fhewing him the bad confequences which must follow from the indulgence of them, and guard him against the commiffion of what is wrong, by leading him to love and efteem what is right; let your advice, reproof, and even your correction, be administered with the tenderness

tenderness and affection of a parent; and beware left you weaken your authority by an injudicious and paffionate manner of enforcing it. Take heed that your instructions receive life and efficacy from your example; for in vain will any endeavour to inftil thofe principles into their child, which appear to have no influence upon their own behaviour.

If you discharge the important truft committed to you by Providence, with fidelity and diligence, you will be supported and encouraged in your labour of love by fome of the nobleft motives and confiderations which can affect the human heart; you will experience that refined gratification which flows from the rational indulgence of parental affection, when it is employed in training up your offspring to knowledge, virtue, and happiness. And while you are fecure of the folid and lafting pleasure which is derived from the consciousness of having acted well, you may reasonably hope to enjoy the fruit of R

your

your tenderness and care, from his gradual improvement in every amiable quality and virtuous difpofition. And, finally, when God the Father of all fhall judge the fecrets of mens hearts by Jefus Christ, and render unto every one according to his works, then fhall your virtuous fervices be acknowledged and rewarded by him, in whose presence is fulness of joy, and at whofe right hand are pleafures for ever

more.

To the due difcharge of this duty, may God incline your hearts, and in the performance of it direct and bless you, for the improvement and happiness of the child, the credit of religion, and to his glory, through Jefus Chrift our Lord. Amen.

Now unto him who is able to keep us from falling, and to present us faultless before the prefence of his glory, with exceeding joy, to the only wife God our Saviour, be glory and majefty, dominion and power, for ever. Amen.

T The Service to be introduced by the following Sentences; the People standing.

WHAT man is he that liveth, and shall

As for man, his days are as grafs; as the flower of the field fo he flourisheth, for the wind paffeth over it and it is gone; and the place thereof fhall know it no more.
