24." Her saints shall shout aloud for joy."

1 SWEET the time, exceeding sweet!
When the saints together meet,
When the Saviour is the theme,
When they joy to sing of him.

2 Sing we then eternal love,

Such as did the Father move: He beheld the world undone, Loved the world, and gave his Son. 3 Sing the Son's amazing love; How he left the realms above, Took our nature and our place, Lived and died to save our race.

4 Sing we, too, the Spirit's love;

With our stubborn hearts he strove, Filled our minds with grief and fear, Brought the precious Saviour near.

5 Sweet the place, exceeding sweet, Where the saints in glory meet; Where the Saviour's still the theme, Where they see and sing of him.

[blocks in formation]

4 Warm our hearts in prayer and praise,
Lift our every thought above;
Hear the grateful songs we raise,
Fill us with thy perfect love.

93. Peace through the Blood of Christ.
Heb. 13: 20, 21.

1 Now may he, who from the dead
Brought the Shepherd of the Sheep,
Jesus Christ, our King and Head,
All our souls in safety keep!

2 May he teach us to fulfill
What is pleasing in his sight;
Perfect us in all his will,

And preserve us day and night!

3 Great Redeemer! thee we praise,
Who the covenant sealed with blood;
While our hearts and voices raise
Loud thanksgivings unto God.

1069." Thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God."

1 PEOPLE of the living God,

I have sought the world around, Paths of sin and sorrow trod,

Peace and comfort nowhere found.

2 Now to you my spirit turns-
Turns, a fugitive unblest;
Brethren! where your altar burns,
Oh, receive me into rest!

3 Lonely I no longer roam,

Like the cloud, the wind, the wave: Where you dwell shall be my home, Where you die shall be my grave.

4 Mine the God whom you adore,
Your Redeemer shall be mine;
Earth can fill my soul no more,
Every idol I resign.

84.

"Kindred in Christ."

1 KINDRED in Christ, for his dear sake,
A hearty welcome here receive;
May we together now partake
The joys which only he can give.

2 May he, by whose kind care we meet,
Send his good Spirit from above,
Make our communications sweet,
And cause our hearts to burn with love.

3 Forgotten be cach worldly theme,

When Christians see each other thus ;
We only wish to speak of him
Who lived, and died, and reigns for us.
4 We'll talk of all he did and said,

And suffered for us here below;
The path he marked for us to tread;
And what he's doing for us now.

5 Thus, as the moments pass away,
We'll love, and wonder, and adore;
And hasten on the glorious day
When we shall meet to part no more.

140.

God with us everywhere.

1 O LORD, how full of sweet content
Our years of pilgrimage are spent!
Where'er we dwell, we dwell with thee,
In heaven, in earth, or on the sea.

2 To us remains nor place nor time;
Our country is in every clime:

We can be calm and free from care
On any shore, since God is there.

3 While place we seek, or place we shun,
The soul finds happiness in none;
But with our God to guide our way,
'T is equal joy to go or stay.

4 Could we be cast where thou art not,
That were indeed a dreadful lot;
But regions none remote we call,
Secure of finding God in all.

164."I sought the Lord, and He heard me."

Psalm 34.

1 LORD, I will bless thee all my days;
Thy praise shall dwell upon my tongue:
My soul shall glory in thy grace,
While saints rejoice to hear the song.

2 Come, magnify the Lord with me;
Come, let us all exalt his name:
I sought th' eternal God, and he
Has not exposed my hope to shame.
3 I told him all my secret grief,
My secret groaning reached his ears;
He gave my inward pains relief,
And calmed the tumult of my fears.
4 His holy angels pitch their tents
Around the men who serve the Lord;
Oh, fear and love him, all his saints!
Taste of his grace and trust his word.

51.

"New-born, I bless the waking hour." 1 IN sleep's serene oblivion laid, I safely passed the silent night; Again I see the breaking shade, And drink again the morning light. 2 New-born, I bless the waking hour, Once more with awe rejoice to be; My conscious soul resumes her power, And springs, my guardian God, to thee. 3 Oh, guide me through the various maze My doubtful feet are doomed to tread; And spread thy shield's protecting blaze Where dangers press around my head. 4 A deeper shade will soon impend,

A deeper sleep mine eyes oppress;
Yet then thy strength shall still defend,
Thy goodness still delight to bless.

5 That deeper shade shall break away,
That deeper sleep shall leave mine eyes;
Thy light shall give eternal day;
Thy love, the rapture of the skies.

174." "He raiseth up the poor out of the dust."
1 Up to the Lord, who reigns on high,
And views the nations from afar,
Let everlasting praises fly,
And tell how large his bounties are.

2 God, who must stoop to view the skies,
And bow to see what angels do,-
Down to our earth he casts his eyes,
And bends his footsteps downward, too.
3 He overrules all mortal things,
And manages our mean affairs;
On humble souls, the King of kings
Bestows his counsels and his cares.

4 Our sorrows and our tears we pour
Into the bosom of our God;

[blocks in formation]

2 Oh! might I once mount up and see
The glories of th' eternal skies,
What little things these worlds would be!
How despicable to my eyes!

3 Had I a glance of thee, my God,
Kingdoms and men would vanish soon-
Vanish as though I saw them not,
As a dim candle dies at noon.

4 Great All in All, eternal King!
Let me but view thy lovely face,
And all my powers shall bow and sing
Thine endless grandeur and thy grace.
849.

Prayer of the Heart and Lips.
10 BLESSED God to thee I raise
My voice in thankful hymns of praise;
And when my voice shall silent be,
My silence shall be praise to thee.

2 For voice and silence doth impart
The filial homage of my heart;
And both alike are understood
By thee, thou Parent of all good-
3 Whose grace is all unsearchable,
Whose care for me no tongue can tell,
Who loves my loudest praise to hear,
And loves to bless my voiceless prayer.

MORNING. 7s. DOUBLE.

[graphic]
[ocr errors]

Glory to the new-born King!
Peace on earth, and mercy mild;
God and sinners reconciled."
2 Joyful, all ye nations, rise;

Join the triumphs of the skies; With th' angelic hosts proclaim, "Christ is born in Bethlehem." 3 Mild he lays his glory by;

Born that man no more may die; Born to raise the sons of earth; Born to give them second birth. 4 Hail, the heaven-born Prince of Peace! Hail, the Sun of Righteousness! Light and life to all he brings, Ris'n with healing in his wings. 5 Let us then with angels sing, "Glory to the new-born King!Peace on earth, and mercy mild; God and sinners reconciled!"

276. "Watchman, what of the night?"

Isaiah 21: 11.

1 WATCHMAN, tell us of the night,

What its signs of promisc arc. Traveler, o'er yon mountain's height, See that glory-beaming star!

2 Watchman, does its beauteous ray
Aught of joy or hope foretell?
Traveler, yes: it brings the day,
Promised day of Israel.

3 Watchman, tell us of the night:
Higher yet that star ascends.
Traveler, blessedness and light,
Peace and truth, its course portends.
4 Watchman, will its beams alone

Gild the spot that gave them birth? Traveler, ages are its own:

See! it bursts o'er all the earth! 5 Watchman, tell us of the night,

For the morning seems to dawn. Commence the fifth stanza with the latter part of the tune.

1042.

"Give place to me that I may
dwell."-Isaiah 49: 20.

1 "GIVE us room, that we may dwell," Zion's children cry aloud:

See their numbers-how they swell!
How they gather like a cloud!

2 Oh, how bright the morning seems! Brighter from so dark a night: Zion is like one that dreams,

Filled with wonder and delight. 3 Lo! thy sun goes down no more, God himself will be thy light; All that caused thee grief before Buried lies in endless night. 4 Zion, now arise and shine!

Lo! thy light from heaven is come: These that crowd from far are thine; Give thy sons and daughters room. 1114. "Sing unto Him a new song."

1 SWELL the anthem, raise the song;
Praises to our God belong;
Saints and angels! join to sing
Praises to the heavenly King.
2 Blessings from his liberal hand
Flow around this happy land:
Kept by him, no foes annoy;
Peace and freedom we enjoy.
3 Here, beneath a virtuous sway,
May we cheerfully obey;
Never feel oppression's rod,
Ever own and worship God.
4 Hark! the voice to nature sings
Praises of the King of kings;
Let us join the choral song,
And the grateful notes prolong.
