Queft. How is the Word made effectual to Sal vation? Anfw. The Spirit of God maketh the Reading, but especially the Preaching of the Word, an ef fectual Means of convincing and converting Sinners, and of building them up in Holinefs and Comfort, through Faith unto Salvation ". 90. How is the Word to be read and heard, that it may become effectual to Salvation? Anfw. That the Word may become effectual to Salvation, we must attend thereunto with Diligence, Preparation P, and Prayer 9, receive it with Faith and Love, lay it up in our Hearts, and practise it in our Livest. 91. Queft. How do the Sacraments become effectual Means of Salvation? Anfw. The Sacraments become effectual Means of Salvation, not from any vertue in them, or in him that doth adminifter them, but only by the Blef Chrift Jefus. v. 16. A Sacrament is an Holy Ordinance inftituted by Chrift; wherein, by fenfible Signs, Christ and the Benefits of the New Covenant are reprefented, fealed and applied to Believers *. 93. Queft. Which are the Sacraments of the News Teftament? Anfw. The Sacraments of the New Teftament, are Baptism, and the Lord's Supper 2: whofo looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, hé being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man fhall be bleffed in his deed. V 91. 1 Peter 3. 21. The like figure whereunto even baptifm, doth alfo now fave us, not the putting away the filth of the flesh, but the anfwer of a good confcience towards God, by the refurrection of Jefus Chrift. Matth. 3. 11. I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance; but he that cometh after me, is mightier than I, whose fhoes I am not worthy to bear: he fhall baptize you with the holy Ghoft, and with fire. 1 Cor. 3. 6. What is Baptifm? Anfw. Baptifm is a Sacrament, wherein the washing with Water, in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, doth fignify and feal our Ingrafting into Chrift, and partaking of the Benefits of the Covenant of Grace, and our Engagement to be the Lord's ". 95. Queft. To whom is Baptifm to be adminiftred? Anfw. Baptifm is not to be adminiftred to any that are out of the Vifible Church, till they profeis their Faith in Chrift, and Obedience to him, but the Infants of fuch as are Members of the Visible Church are to be baptized d. 96. Queft. What is the Lord's Supper? Anfw. The Lord's Supper is, A Sacrament, wherein, by giving and receiving Bread and Wine according to Chrift's Appointment, his Death is fhewed forth; 95. Acts 8. 36. And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water and the eunuch faid, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? v. 37. And Philip faid, If thou believeft with all thine heart, thou mayeft. And he anfwered and faid, I believe that Jefus Chrift is the Son of God. Acts 2. 38. I Cor. forth; and the worthy Receivers are, not after a Cor poral and Carnal manner, but by Faith, made Partakers of his Body and Blood, with all his Benefits to their Spiritual Nourishment, and Growth in Grace. 97. Queft. What is required to the worthy receiving of the Lord's Supper? Anfw. It is required of them that would worthily partake of the Lord's Supper, That they examine themselves, of their Knowledge to difcern the Lord's Body, of their Faith to feed upon him, of their Repentance, Love, and new Obedience ; left coming unworthily, they eat and drink Judgment to themselves!. 98. Queft. 8 2 Cor. 13.3. Examine your felyes, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own felves: know you not your own felves, how that Jefus Chrift is in you, except ye be reprobates? hI Cor, II. 31, For if we would judge our felves, we should not be judged. 96. But let a man examine himself, and fo let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. v. 29. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not difcerning the Lords body. 1 Cor. 10. 16. The cup of bleffing which we blefs, is it not the communion ofthe blood of Chrift? the bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Chrift? v. 17. For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all, partakers of that one k1 Cor. s. 7. Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Chrift our paffover is far crificed for us. v. 8.
