CHA P. XIV.

Of Saving Faith.

HE Grace of Faith, whereby the Elect are enabled to believe to the faving of their Souls, is the Work of the Spirit of Chrift in their Hearts; and is ordinarily wrought by the Miniftery of the Word: By which alfo, and by the Adminiftration of the Sacraments and Prayer, it is increased and strengthned d.

AII. By this Faith, a Chriftian believeth to be true whatsoever is revealed in the Word, for the Authohear without a preacher? 7. 17. So then, faith cometh by heating, and hearing by the word of God.

I. Heb. 10. 39. But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the faving of the foul.

He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witnefs in himself: he that believeth not God, hath made him a liar, because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. Acts 24. 14. III. This Faith is different in Degrees, weak or ftrong; may be often and many ways affailed and weakned, but gets the Victory!; growing up in many to the Attainment of a full Affurance through Christ mwho is both the Author, and Finisher of our Faith".

III. Heb. s. 13. For every one that useth milk, is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. v. 14. But ftrong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even thofe who by reafon of use have their fenfes exercised to difcern both good and evil. Rom. 4. 19. And being not weak in faith, he confidered not his own body now dead,when he was about an hundred year old, neither yet the deadnefs of Sarahs womb, v. 20. He ftaggered not at the promise of God through unbelief, but was ftrong in faith, giving glory to God. Matth. 6. 30, Wherefore if God fo clothe the grafs of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is caft into the oven, shall be not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? Matth. 8. 10. When Jefus heard it, he marvelled, and faid to them that followed, Verily I fay unto you, I have not found fo great faith, no not in Ifrael.

wherewith ye fhall be able to quench the fiery darts of the wicked. 1 John 5.4. For whatfoever is born of God, overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. V. S. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jefus is the Son of God?

That, their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full affurance of understanding, to the acknowledgment ofthe mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Chrift.
