Litterary Journal should, in fome measure, refemble a Map*: for as this prefents us, at one View, and in a very narrow Compass, with the Extent of one or more Countries, with their Districts and Divifions, their Rivers, their Cities, and other things deferving our Obfervation fo the other is defign'd to fet before us, in a few Sheets, whatever is compriz'd in various and voluminous Treatifes, by giving us their History, their Plan, their Analysis, and fome of thofe Paffages, which diftinguish themfelves from the rest.

Pursuant to this Idea, our Intention was, when we undertook this Work, 1ft, To take notice of the most valuable Books, whether in Latin, Italian, French or Englifh, and fuch only as were latest publifh'd in any parts of Europe, which the Correfpondence, we had establish'd abroad, enabled us to do. And, 2dly, To take under our Confideration Books of all Sciences, viz. Divinity, Philofophy, Mathematicks, Phyfick, particularly the Belles Lettres, and History; not forgetting to make proper Remarks upon Medals, In

fcriptions, and what other Remains of Antiquity fhou'd at any time come in our way. And now, that we have publish'd as many Numbers as will compofe a Volume, our Readers may judge whether we have executed our Plan according to our Promife. They may depend on us for the future, that the fame Correfpondence to fupply new and curious Books, the fame Pains and Application in perufing them, the fame Care and Exactnefs in abridging them, and the Jame Judgment and Impartiality in making our Remarks upon them, shall most certainly be continued.
