HYMN 116. D. S. M.

The issues of life and death.

1 OH! where shall rest be found, Rest for the weary soul? "Twere vain the ocean-depths to sound, Or pierce to either pole;

2

3

The world can never give
The rest for which we sigh;
'Tis not the whole of life to live,
Nor all of death to die.

Beyond this vale of tears

There is a life above,

Unmeasured by the flight of years;
And all that life is love-
There is a death, whose pang
Outlasts the fleeting breath;
Oh! what eternal horrors hang
Around the second death!

Lord God of truth and grace!
Teach us that death to shun,
Lest we be banished from thy face,
For evermore undone ;

Here would we end our quest:

Alone are found in Thee

The life of perfect love-the rest
Of immortality.

HYMN 117. P. M.

Our Lord's resurrection an earnest of ours.

10 JOYFUL Sound! O glorious hour!
When Jesus, by Almighty power,
Revived and left the grave:
In all his works behold him great,
Before, Almighty to create,
Almighty now to save!

2 "The first-begotten from the dead,"
Behold him risen, his people's head!
To make their life secure :

They too like him shall yield their breath,
Like him-shall burst the bonds of death,
Their resurrection sure.

3 Why should his people fear the grave?
Since Jesus will their spirits save,
And wake their sleeping dust:
What though this earthly house shall fail,
Almighty power will yet prevail,
And graves resign their trust.

4 Ye ransomed! let your praise resound, And in your Master's work abound, Stedfast unmoveable :

In him you labour not in vain;
Your bodies shall be raised again,
No more corruptible.

HYMN 118. P. M.

Deliverance to the captives.

1 ON the mountain's top appearing,
Lo! the sacred herald stands,
Welcome news to Zion bearing,
Zion long in hostile lands;
Mourning captive!

God himself shall loose thy bands.

2 Has thy night been long and mournful? Have thy friends unfaithful proved? All thy foes been proud and scornful, By thy sighs and tears unmoved? Cease thy mourning,

Zion still is well-beloved.

3 Lo! thy sun is risen in glory!
God himself appears thy friend,
All thy foes shall flee before Thee,
Here their boasted triumphs end:
Great deliverance

Zion's king vouchsafes to send.

4 Enemies no more shall trouble;
All thy warfare now is past;

For thy shame thou shalt have double,
Days of

peace are come at last:

All thy conflicts

End in everlasting rest.

HYMN 119. L. M.

For the Redeemer's return to his Church.

1 O SAVIOUR! is thy promise fled?
Nor longer might thy grace endure
To heal the sick, and raise the dead,
And preach thy Gospel to the poor?
2 A feeble race, by passion driven,
In darkness and in doubt we roam,
And lift our anxious eyes to heaven,
Our hope, our harbour, and our home!
3 Yet, 'mid the wild and wintry gale,
When death rides darkly o'er the sea,
And strength, and earthly daring fail,
Our prayers, Redeemer! rest on Thee.
4 Come, Jesus! come, return again,
With brighter beams thy servants bless,
Who long to hail thy perfect reign,
And share thy kingdom's happiness.
5 Oh! may thy grace, with heavenly shower,
Our stony hearts for truth prepare;
Sow in our souls the seed of power,
Then come, and reap thy harvest there!
HYMN 120. L. M.

The Spirit accompanying the Word of God.

10 SPIRIT of the living God!

In all the fulness of thy grace,

Where'er the foot of man hath trod,
Descend on our apostate race.

2 Give tongues of fire, and hearts of love, To preach the reconciling word; Give power and unction from above, Where'er the joyful sound is heard. 3 O Spirit of the Lord! prepare

All the whole earth their God to meet; Breathe Thou abroad, like morning air, "Till hearts of stone begin to beat.

4 Baptize the nations! far and nigh,
The triumphs of the cross record;
The name of Jesus glorify,
"Till every kindred call him Lord.

HYMN 121. c. M.

"Lord remember me."

10 THOU! from whom all goodness flows,
I lift my soul to Thee;
In all my sorrows, conflicts, woes,
Good Lord, remember me.

2 When on my aching, burden'd heart
My sins lie heavily,

Thy pardon grant, new peace impart;
Good Lord, remember me.

3 When trials sore obstruct my way,
And ills I cannot flee,

O let my strength be as my day!
Good Lord! remember me.
