The Thursday Evening Lecture, at the Rev. Mr. Maurice's Meeting,

[blocks in formation]

By fov'reign jufticę man is bound

Beneath his nature's curfe to bow; With weary'd limbs to till the ground, And eat his bread with dewy brow.

Yet, mingled mercy has decreed

The time when rich reward fhall

come;

That man in hope fhall fow the feed,
And bring with joy his harvest home.

Again we fee thy promife true;

The earth with plenteous crops o'erfpread,

Awakens gratitude anew,

[Pale mis'ry lifts its haggard eyes,

And feeks thy wafted gifts in vain's
Whom wanton fux'ry doth defpife,
Oppreffion crushes with difdain.

Oh! fave us from the threaten'd doom
Of those who scorn thy mercies, Lord!
The fcourge of war, the wrath to come,
And dreadful famine of thy word!
ALIQUIS.

A WEDDING HYMN,

THY choiceft bleffings, Lord, impart
To our young friends, who now in
love

Would join in bands no more to part,
Have join'd

Till call'd to happier realms above.

In Wifdom's ways may they be found,
And Pleatantnefs their path attend;

And gives the fons of famine bread. May holy Peace with them abound,

The ftores of fea, and earth, and air,
Thou doft to needy mortals grant,
To banish bafe corroding care,

And fatisfy our ev'ry want.

Yet, what the flinty heart can move!
With frantic head and vengeful hand,
Man trives to blaff thy common love,
And spread deftruction o'er the land!

He calls his fellow-worm his foe,

And heaps thy curfes on his head; Forges each inftrument of woe,

And mingles millions with the dead!

Scatter'd by war's deftructive pow'rs,

Or mould'ring in an useless hoard, The flame confumes, or worm devours, -Thy, bounty from the poor man's board!

And Jefus be their confiant friend!

In faith and knowledge may they grow

Each day, and find that perfect love
That cafts out fear, and fin, and woe,
And gives a tafte of joys above.
As ivy twines around the tree,

So may they, Lord, both cleave to thee,
Upheld and ftrengthen'd by thy grace !

And holds it in a close embrace,

As partners of the grace of life,

May they each other's burden bear; May mutual love exclude all ftcife,

And kindness banish ev'ry care.

Thus bleft and happy may they live!
And when they're call'd by death
away,

The wreck of time may they furvive,
And reign with thee in endless day!
