PREFACE.

In presenting another volume of the Independent Magazine to the public, we cannot but congratulate ourselves and our readers upon the measure of favour which has accompanied our undertaking. The experiment has been so far successful, that we are encouraged to proceed with high hopes as to future and more extensive usefulness.

At first starting many doubts were entertained respecting the degree of support which the denomination we more especially serve might be willing to render. The problem was one which time alone could solve. We now feel convinced that amongst our young people, Sunday-school teachers, and others, we have a numerous and intelligent body of friends. For them we labour, and so long as they continue to countenance us (which is increasingly the case), we shall continue to render them our best service.

We are happy to learn that our Morning and Afternoon Lessons" have given satisfaction, and are adopted in many families and schools. It is, moreover, gratifying to receive testimonies from various quarters that our periodical improves, rather than deteriorates, as it advances in age.

To our various contributors our best thanks are due. We have the promise of additional help in this respect, which we trust will be acknowledged by a greatly increased circulation.

May the blessing of the Most High rest upon our efforts to do good.
