the flock shall be heard, for the Lord hath spoiled their pastures.” "How shall we escape if we neglect so great salvation." Let gentleness and meekness be the constant features of our hearts that when provocation cometh we may find ourselves calm and resigned to the will of Heaven, if it should come even by the hand of our enemies. I confess myself to be a miserable sinner, and have great need of God's help and mercy, to carry me through this vale of tears, but I know he delights in pardon, and if we confess and forsake our sins, we shall find mercy.

Let us make one more effort to live so that God may dwell in us to the cleansing of our hearts and ways, so, that he may visit us by his spirit. Then shall we be satisfied when we are like him, or more like him. It is my sincere prayer that he will not cast us off to the disgrace of his cause.

Let me hear from you soon, and believe me as ever,
Your unworthy Friend,

DEAR SISTER:

ABIGAIL HOUSE.

Whilst meditating upon faith, I am led to believe, we do not realize properly its nature. When we pray, we must not doubt, but that we shall receive, and if we have faith, without works, then are we not profited.

Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead being alone. By faith Moses led the Israelites through the wilderness. Through faith kingdoms were subdued, and many others, too numerous for me t mention. Read for yourself in the eleventh of Hebrews how they all died in faith, looking and waiting for the promises.

The Apostle tells us,-"If a brother or sister be naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled, notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful for the body what doth it profit? Why nothing of course. Our faith is made perfect by

works. Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. Is any sick among you, let him call for the Elders of the church and let them pray over him, etc., and the prayer of faith shall save the sick.

Elias also prayed that it might not rain, and it rained not. And he prayed again, and the heavens gave rain.

How unprofitable are our lives without a degree of that faith, that works by love and purifies the heart. "Our life what is it? even a vapor as the flower of grass we shall pass away." Those that endure trials and temptations are counted happy, and for our encouragement the Apostle saith,-"Be patient therefore, brethren unto the coming of the Lord. Be ye also patient, stablish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord draws nigh." And now dear sister shall we be found in faith? Do we anticipate when our Lord shall come of being caught up together with him, and those that have long been asleep, to meet him in the air, and so be forever with him?-O it is too great! for such poor, unworthy worms of the dust. Be comforted my dear sister with the thought, and remain faithful.

ABIGAIL HOUSE.

MY DEAR FRIEND:

It is a long time since I have heard from you, and I hardly know where to write to you, it may chance to find you and it may not; if it should, it will serve as a token of friendship, which is of importance to old acquaintances. Formerly, I have been much delighted in your company, and can sincerely wish it could be again received with the same enjoyment, but should we never be permitted to enjoy each others society again, let us hold fast that affection that is deep rooted in our minds. I found nothing wanting in you, but what we term a change of heart, or being born again, to which you have often said you were a stranger: I hope ere this you can say through grace divine, God is your portion, and you will not fear what

man can do unto you. If God be for us, who can be against us? We know our natures are in opposition to true holiness, for that reason a warfare takes place that should always be kept up in good earnest and our carnal minds, brought into subjection to him who is all, and in all.

Tell me my dear Mrs. S. how it is with you, can you say all is well? Are you dreaming of heaven in consequence of your good moral character? a good character is of importance, but if that is all, rest not contented until you have found that peace which is like a river, that makes glad the City of our God.

Write me as soon as you receive this, for I have thought of you much of late, -O could I reach your hand once more! My heart would leap for joy, but if I never more see you, accept of my thanks for all your kindnesses to me. I shall never forget them. Give my best respects to your daughter, tell her to remember her Creator in the days of her youth, and remember she must give an account of her youthful vanities. Still let me say to her, that youth is the best time to seek religion, and serve the Lord before we get hardened in sin,-and the sweet influences of the Holy Spirit have less effect upon the mind. Remember me to your husband and may you go hand in hand, through this wilderness world, and at last be so happy as to reign with Christ above, which is the sincere wish of her who pens these lines; and believe me as ever,

Your Friend,

ABIGAIL HOUSE.

ON READING II OF KINGS, 4.

It fell on a day, as Elisha pass'd by,

There was a great woman that unto him cried,
And so in his way, she prepared him a bed,
And as oft as he pass'd, he called and eat bread.

She said to her husband, now I do perceive,
This man is so holy, that him i'll receive,
I'll set in his chamber, a table and stool,
Sure this will I do, if he calls me a fool.

It fell on a day as he partook of his fare,
What shall I give for all her kind care?
Go, call her Gahazi; she came to the door,
A son you shall have, and not any more.

It feil on a day, when the child it grew sick,
Carry him to his mother and be very quick,
He said to his father, my head, O my head!
He sat until noon, and then he was dead.

She call'd to her husband, do send me I pray,
One of those young men, and do not say nay,
For I must go where the man of God dwells,
Why it is neither new-moon; but she said all is well.

She started with speed and led him not slack,
Thy driving for me but let the whip crack,
He saw her a coming, and said to his servant:

Go meet her and tell me, she'll give you her errant.

N

I pray to tell me, and that without guile,

Is it well with thy husband? Is it well with thy child? And she answered the man it is all very well,

I never will leave you, but live where you dwell.

When he returned back, he walked to and fro,
He then stretched himself upon the child so,
That he sneezed seven times and opened his eyes,
He said to the shunammite, now take thy praise.

ON READING MATTHEW,

26.

Come all who love the Lord indeed,
And seek his counsel for to plead,
May you be brought his word to see,
May it be wine upon the lee.

We read what Christ said to his Saints,
That they must watch without complaint,
Can you not watch with me one hour,
To save yourself from Satan's power?

When he came back his soul was pained,
For he found sleepiug yet again,
Saying-sleep on now and take your rest,
Surely this way is not the best.

He went again and he pray'd,

He fell upon the ground and said,-
O father if it is thy will

I'll drink of it for to fulfill.
