God commands, and the fea fwells and is impetu ous: the waves afcend to the heavens, and defcend to the depth of the abyfs. God fpeaks, and with a fingle word he changes the ftorm into a gentle breeze, and the tumultuous agitation of the waves into a deep filence. How ftrong! We owe the explication of this Song to Mr. HerJan, formerly Rhetoric Profeffor in the college Du Pleffis. The reader may juftly expect fomething excellent from his name and reputation. We have thought proper to change fome few things in it, which the author would not difapprove were he living.

Ver. 2. Fortitudo mea & laus mea Dominus, & factus eft mihi in falutem. Ifte Deus meus, & glorificaba eum: Deus patris mei, & exaltabo eum.

Ver. 3. Dominus quafi vir pugnator: Omnipotens, nomen ejus. Heb. Jehova, vir belli: Jehova nomen ejus.

Ver. 4. Currus Pharaonis & exercitum ejus projecit in mare: electi principes ejus fubmerfi funt in mari rubro.

There is not, in the original, either Que or Et, or any other conjunction; the expreffion is the ftronger upon that account.

Ver. 2. The Lord is my ftrength and fong, and he is become my falvation: he is my God, and I will prepare him an habitation; my father's God, and I I will exalt him.
