gaudier, more frequently less so, you will have a good general salmon fly.

No. 2. Body, black mohair; yellow tag, silver tinsel, a dark purple hackle over all, and orange hackle at the head; wings, six toppings, blue head and topping for tail. Hook, No. 8 or 9, Limerick. No. 3. Body, half orange, half black, the black next the wings, and of pig's hair, to be ribbed with gold and flat silver, a black hackle from the centre upwards, yellow hackle beyond the shoulder, and dark blue head; wings, four toppings, with two jungle-cock feathers, one at each side, and feelers of blue maccaw. Hook, No. 8 and 9, or BB, or smaller for low water.

No. 4. Body, puce mohair and claret hackle, tag yellow or orange mohair, to be ribbed with gold twist, and orange hackle round the shoulder with blue jay and king-fisher; wing, full, mixed and gaudy. Hook, No. 9, or BB.

Sutherlandshire Flies.

No. 1. Body, brown mohair, black cock's hackle and silver twist over; small topping for tail; wings, mallard and Guinea hen feathers mixed; black head. Hook, No. 9, or BB.

No. 2. Body, black mohair, yellow tag, black hackle, with a piece of orange mohair rolled on and picked out at the head; small topping for tail;

wings, the spotted peacock wing feather neatly tied, and the fibres to be kept whole at each side. Hook, BB, or B.

No. 3. Body, claret mohair, claret hackle, gold tinsel; orange tag and small topping for tail; wings, brown mallard. Hook, B.

No. 4. Body, yellow silk, grouse hackle from the centre upwards, amber hackle at the shoulder, and black head, to be ribbed with gold tinsel; wings, brown mallard. Hook, CC.

Flies for the River Ness.

No. 1. Body, black mohair, orange tag, black hackle and gold twist; and round the shoulder, orange hackle; topping for tail; wings, gaudy and well mixed. Hook, No. 9, or BB.

No. 2. Body, orange mohair and black red hackle; ostrich tag, silver tinsel, and small topping for tail; wings, gaudy and mixed, with two toppings, extending a little longer than the other feathers. Hook, B, or BB.

No. 3. Body, cinnamon brown mohair, with hackle of the same colour; tag, black ostrich, dark claret hackle at the shoulder, gold twist, and topping for tail; wings, two toppings, brown mallard and Guinea hen feathers and macaw feelers. Hook, No. 9, or B.

No. 4. Body, green mohair and black hackle,

yellow tag, gold tinsel, orange hackle round the shoulder, and small topping for tail; wings, two toppings, and a short (golden pheasant) neck feather between them, with a little bustard and Guinea hen feathers on each side; macaw feelers; green peacock head. Hook, BB.

The flies hitherto described are peculiarly fitting for Scotland: I will now come to Irish flies. The first list comprises Blacker's best patterns; the second those of W. K. Rogers, Esquire, of Cork. The latter have never been in any way published; and I am confident that the success of the salmon fisher who shall use them will render him as grateful to Mr. Rogers as I am for his kindness in carefully describing them to me, that I might transcribe them for the benefit of the public.

Blacker's Shannon Flies.

No. 1. Body, blue floss silk, orange tag, topping for tail, to be ribbed with flat silver tinsel and round gold twist, a dyed blue hackle to be struck from the tail to the shoulder, around which, a blue jay feather; wings, twelve large golden pheasant toppings; yellow pig's hair, or mohair picked out, for head. Hook, No. 3, Limerick.

No. 2. Body, yellow at the tail, then blue, then orange, and purple at the shoulder; legs, purple and blue jay hackles, struck from the centre up

wards; wings, two large toppings, extending a quarter of an inch over the bend of the hook, and sprigged at each side with a few fibres of golden pheasant tail, peacock wing and mallard feathers ; on each side, two fibres of blue and yellow macaw ; topping for tail, and black head. Hook, No. 5 or 6, Limerick.

No. 3. Body, purple pig's hair, tag, yellow or orange silk; topping for tail, to be ribbed with flat gold and silver twist; legs, a dark purple hackle, struck up from the tail, and blue jay round the shoulder; wings, twelve toppings, mixed with Guinea hen, bustard and Argus pheasant feathers; blue macaw feelers. Hook, large, 3 and 4, Limerick.

No. 4. Body, half orange, half purple pig's hair, the orange next the tail, wine-purple hackle, struck in from the centre, with an orange hackle round the shoulder, and blue jay above it; wings, brown mallard, golden pheasant tail, neck and toppings mixed with blue macaw and bustard feather, a little Guinea hen and tail feathers at each side; to be ribbed with silver twist or tinsel; head, blue pig's hair. Hook, 7 or 8, Limerick.

The wings of the two last flies will be found more killing with two cock of the rock feathers in addition to the others.

Ballyshannon Flies.

No. 1. Body, yellow or gold colour floss silk, ribbed with gold tinsel, ostrich tag; tail, two toppings; legs, a bright yellow hackle from the tail up, a little yellow green mohair, and blue jay at the shoulder; wings, two toppings mixed with neck-feathers, a few fibres of ibis, bustard, mallard, Argus pheasant, peacock wing, and yellow macaw, a little green parrot; and ostrich head. Hook, No. 9, or BB.

No. 2. Body, orange floss silk, ribbed with gold tinsel, a deep orange hackle struck over the body, and blue jay at the shoulder; wings, two cock of the rock's feathers, with a topping at each side of them, to extend a little longer over the bend of the hook, fibres of bustard, and jungle cock and macaw for feelers; tail a rather long topping; head, black, with a little blue mohair underneath it. Hook, No. 9, or BB.

No. 3. Body, lilac floss silk, with a tag of orange mohair, gold twist; blue dun hackle for legs; blue jay and kingfisher feather at the shoulder; wings, a few fibres of mallard, mixed with toppings, neck and tail, feathers of the golden pheasant, and a few fibres of the cock of the rock, bustard, Guinea hen and green parrot; feelers, blue and yellow macaw. Hook, BB.

No. 4. Body, light blue dun fur, mixed with
