BY EPHEMERA, Of “Bell's Life in London." " I have been a great follower of fishing myself, and in its cheersul solitude LONGMAN, BROWN, GREEN, & LONGMANS, PATERNOSTER-ROW. Gratefulln Inscribed, BY HIS OBLIGED AND FAITHFUL SERVANT, THE AUTHOR. 2. Cambridge Street, Hyde Park Square, 1848. PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION. It is a pleasant thing to a man of honest heart to have an opportunity of trying to pay a portion of his debts. It is pleasanter still to have a liberal creditor, like the public, who will be satisfied with instalments, and even “take the will for the deed.” If I were not aware of the generosity of the public, I should despair of ever being able to liquidate the large claims it has upon I feel abashed at the success it has heaped upon me, knowing my own unworthiness better than any one else can know it. Humiliated by an undeserved award of merit, I must endeavour to prove my gratitude in the best way I can. No author has ever been more kindly treated by his public judges than myself. I voluntarily put myself on trial before them, and all of them, without a single exception, have recorded verdicts me. M312364 |
