7 0 keep my soul from death,

Nor put my hope to shame ; For I have placed my only trust In my Redeemer's name. 8 With humble faith I wait To see thy face again: Of Israel it shall ne'er be said, "He sought the Lord in vain."

HYMN 163. B. 2. C. M. b

354} Bangor, Carolina.

Complaint of desertion and temptation. 1.DEAR Lord, behold our sore distress;

grace,

Our sins attempt to reign; Stretch out thine arm of conquering And let thy foes be slain. 2 The lion, with his dreadful roar, Affrights thy feeble sheep: Reveal the glory of thy power, And chain him to the deep. 3 Must we indulge a long despair Shall our petitions die?

Our mournings never reach thine ear? Nor tears affect thine eye? 4If thou despise a mortal groan, Yet hear a Saviour's blood; An advocate so near the throne, Pleads and prevails with God. 5 He bought the Spirit's powerful sword, To slay our deadly foes: Our sins shall die beneath thy word, And hell in vain oppose.

6 How boundless is our Father's grace In height, and depth, and length, He makes his Son our righteousness, His Spirit is our strength.

Complaint under temptations of the devil.
1HOW
OW long wilt thou conceal thy face?
My God, how long delay?
When shall I feel those heavenly rays
That chase my fears away?
2 How long shall my poor labouring soul
Wrestle and toil in vain?

Thy word can all my foes control,
And ease my raging pain.

3 See how the prince of darkness tries
All his malicious arts;
He spreads a mist around my eyes,
And throws his fiery darts.
4 Be thou my sun, and thou my shield;
My soul in safety keep;

Make haste, before mine eyes are seal'd
In death's eternal sleep.
5 How would the tempter boast aloud
If I become his prey!

Behold the sons of hell grow proud
At thy so long delay.

6 But they shall fly at thy rebuke,
And Satan hide his head:
He knows the terrors of thy look,
And hears thy voice with dread.
Thou wilt display that sovereign grace
Where all my hopes have hung;
I shall employ my lips in praise,
And victory shall be sung.

HYMN 20. B. 2. C. M. b
Chelsea, Carolina.

Backslidings and returns; or, the inconstancy of our love,

WHY is my heart so far from thee,

My God, my chief delight? Why are my thoughts no more by day With thee, no more by night? 2[Why should my foolish passions rove? Where can such sweetness be, As I have tasted in thy love, As I have found in thee?] 3 When my forgetful soul renews The savour of thy grace, My heart presumes I cannot lose The relish all my days.

4

But ere one fleeting hour is past, The flattering world employs Some sensual bait to seize my taste, And to pollute my joys.,

5 [Trifles of nature, or of art,

7

With fair, deceitful charms, Intrude into my thoughtless heart,

And thrust me from thy arms] 6 Then I repent, and vex my soul That I should leave thee so; Where will those wild affections roll, That let a Saviour go? [Sin's promis'd joys are turn'd to pain, And I am drown'd in grief; But my dear Lord returns again, He flies to my relief! Seizing my soul with sweet surprise, He draws with loving bands; Divine compassion in his eyes, And pardon in his hands.] 9 [Wretch that I am, to wander thus In chase of false delight! Let me be fasten'd to thy cross, Rather than lose thy sight.]

8

10 Make haste, my days,to reach the goal,'
And bring my heart to rest
On the dear centre of my soul,
My God, my Saviour's breast!

97th Psalm, German. Pleading with God under desertion; or, hope in durkness.

OW long, O Lord, shall I complain, Like one who seeks his God in vain? Canst thou thy face forever hide, And I still pray and be deny'd ? 2 Shall I forever be forgot,

As one whom thou regardest not?
Still shall my soul thine absence mourn?
And still despair of thy return?
3. How long shall my poor, troubled breast
Be with these anxious thoughts oppress'd ?
And Satan, my malicious foe,
Rejoice to see me sunk so low?
4 Hear, Lord, and grant me quick relief,
Before my death conclude my grief;
If thou withhold thy heavenly light,
I sleep in everlasting night.

5 How will the powers of darkness boast,
If but one praying soul be lost!
But I have trusted in thy grace,
And shall again behold thy face.
6 Whate'er my fears or foes suggest,
Thou art my hope, my joy, my rest;
My heart shall feel thy love, and raise
My cheerful voice to songs of praise.

'A Restore thy servant, Lord;

prayer pardon and

MIDST thy wrath remember love,

Nor let a father's chastening prove Like an avenger's sword.

2 Thine arrows stick within my heart, My flesh is sorely press'd; Between the sorrow and the smart My spirit finds no rest.

3 My sins a heavy load appear,

And o'er my head are gone; Too heavy they for me to bear, Too hard for me t' atone. 4 My thoughts are like a troubled sea, My head still bending down ; And I go mourning all the day. Beneath my Father's frown

5 Lord, I am weak and broken sore,
None of my powers are whole ;
The inward anguish makes me roar,
The anguish of my soul.

6 All my desire to thee is known,
Thine eye counts every tear;
And every sigh and every groan
Is notic'd by thine ear.

7 Thou art my God, my only hope,

My God will hear my cry;
My God will bear my spirit up,
When Satan bids me die.

[My foot is ever apt to slide,
My foes rejoice to see't;
They raise their pleasure and their pride,
When they supplant my feet.

9 But I'll confess my guilt to thee,
And grieve for all my sin;
I'll mourn how weak my graces be,
And beg support divine.

10 My God, forgive my follies past,
And be forever nigh;
O Lord of my salvation, haste,
Before thy servant die.]

2d # 361 PSALM 107. 24 Part. L. 11. Leeds, Bath.

Correction for sin, and release by prayer.

1 FROM age to age exest 18 same;
God and his grace are still the same;
11e fills the hungry soul with food.
And feeds the poor with every good.
2 But if their hearts rebel, and rise
Against the God that rules the skies;
If they reject his heavenly word,
And slight the counsels of the Lord;
3 He'll bring their spirits to the ground,
And no deliverer shall be found:
Laden with grief, they waste their breath
In darkness, and the shades of death.

4 Then to the Lord they raise their cries;
He makes the dawning light arise,
And scatters all that dismal shade,
That hung so heavy round their head.
5 He cuts the bars of brass in two,
And lets the smiling prisoners through;
Takes off the load of guilt and grief,
And gives the labouring soul relief.
60 may the sons of men record
The wondrous goodness of the Lord!
Tow great his works! how kind his ways!
every tongue pronounce his praise.

Hearing of prayer; or, God our por-
tion, and Christ our hope.

Ο

GOD of grace and righteousness,
Hear and attend when I complain;
Thou hast enlarg'd me in distress,
Bow down a gracious ear again.
2 Ye sons of men, in vain ye try,
To turn my glory into shame;
How long will scoffers love to lie,
And dare reproach my Saviour's name?
3 Know that the Lord divides his saints
From all the tribes of men beside;
He hears the cry of penitents
For the dear sake of Christ that died.
4 When our obedient hands have done
A thousand works of righteousness,
We put our trust in God alone,
And glory in his pardoning grace.
5 Let the unthinking many say,
Who will bestow sonie earthly good?
But, Lord, thy light and love we pray;
Our souls desire this heavenly food.
6 Then shall my cheerful powers rejoice
At grace and favour so divine;
Nor will I change my happy choice
For all their corn and all their wine.

mind,

Thou hast revers'd our heavy doom;
So God forgave when Israel sinn'd,
And brought his wandering captives home.
Thou hast begun to set us free,
Now let our hearts be turn'd to thee,
And made thy fiercest wrath abate;
And thy salvation be complete.
Revive our dying graces, Lord,
And let thy-saints in thee rejoice;
Make known thy truth, fulfil thy word;
We wait for praise to tune our voice.
4 We wait to hear what God will say;
He'll speak, and give his people peace;
But let them run no more astray,
Lest his returning wrath increase.

PSALM 51, 3d Part. L. M. b Putney, Bath. The backslider restored; or, repentance, and faith in the blood of Christ. 10 THOU, that hear'st when sinners cry, Though all my crimes before thee lie,

Behold them not with angry look, 16 Strike, mighty grace, my flinty soul,

But blot their memory from thy book.
2Create my nature pure within,
And form my soul averse to sin;
Let thy good Spirit ne'er depart,
Nor hide thy presence from my heart.
3 I cannot live without thy light,
Cast out and banish'd from thy sight:
Thine holy joys, my God, restore,
And guard me, that I fall no more.
4 Though I have griev'd thy Spirit, Lord,
His help and comfort still afford:
And let a wretch come near thy throne,
To plead the merits of thy Son.
5 A broken heart, my God, my King,
Is all the sacrifice I bring;
The God of grace will ne'er despise
A broken heart for sacrifice..
6 My soul lies humbled in the dust,
And owns thy dreadful sentence just;
Look down, O Lord, with pitying eye,
And save the soul condemn'd to die.
7 Then will I teach the world thy ways;
Sinners shall learn thy sovereign grace;
I'll lead them to my Saviour's blood,
And they shall praise a pardoning God.
80 may thy love inspire my tongue!
Salvation shall be all my song;
And all my powers shall join to bless
The Lord, my strength and righteousness.

PSALM 18. 1st Part. L. M. X

Deliverance from despair; or, temptations overcome.

1THEE will I love, O Lord, my
strength,

My rock, my tower, my high defence;
Thy mighty arm shall be my trust,
For I have found salvation thence.
2 Death and the terrors of the grave
Stood round me with their dismal shade;
While floods of high temptations rose,
And made my sinking soul afraid.
3I saw. the opening gates of hell,
With endless pains and sorrows there,
Which none but they that feel can tell,
While I was hurry'd to despair.
4 In my distress, I call'd my God,
When I could scarce believe him mine;
He bow'd his ear to my complaint;
Then did his grace appear divine..
5 [With speed he flew to my relief,
As on a cherub's wing he rode;
Awful and bright as lightning shone
The face of my deliverer, God.
Temptations fled at his rebuke,
The blast of his almighty breath;
He sent salvation from on high,.
And drew me from the deeps of death.]

Much was their. strength, and more their

Abridge, Christmas.

A song of deliverance from great distress.
WAITED patient for the Lord;
He bow'd to hear my cry;
He saw me resting on his word,
And brought salvation nigh.
2 He rais'd me from a horrid pit,

3

Where mourning, long I lay;
And from my bonds releas'd my feet;
Deep bonds of miry clay.
Firm on a rock, he made me stand,
And taught my cheerful tongue

To praise the wonders of his hand, In a new, thankful song. 4 I'l spread his works of grace abroad; The saints with joy shall hear; And sinners learn to make my God Their only hope and fear. 5 How many are thy thoughts of love!

Thy mercies, Lord, how great:

We have not words nor hours enough
Their numbers to repeat.

And light and peace depart, My God beholds my heavy wo, And bears me on his heart.

Treasures of grace to them are given, And crowns of joy laid up in heaven. 2 Blest are the men of broken heart, b Who mourn for sin with inward smart; The blood of Christ divinely flows, A healing balm for all their woes.

PSALM 61, S. M.

Safety in God.
1 WHEN, overwhelm'd with grief, 3
My heart within me dies;
Helpless, and far from all relief,
To heaven I lift mine eyes.
2 O lead me to the rock

That's high above my head,
And make the covert of thy wings
My shelter and my shade.
3 Within thy presence, Lord,
Forever I'll abide ;
Thou art the tower of my defence,
The refuge where I hide,

4 Thou givest me the lot

Of those that fear thy name; If endless life be their reward, I shall possess the same.

HYMN 50. B. 2., L. M.

Blest are the meek, who stand afar
From rage and passion, noise and war;
God will secure their happy state,
And plead their cause against the great.
4 Blest are the souls that thirst for grace,
Hunger and long for righteousness;
They shall be well supply'd and fed
With living streams and living bread.
5 Blest are the men, whose bowels move
And melt with sympathy and love;
From Christ, the Lord, shall they obtain
Like sympathy and love again.

6 Blest are the pure, whose hearts are
From the defiling power of sin; [clean
With endless pleasure they shall see
A God of spotless purity.

b7 Blest are the men of peaceful life,

Bath.
Comfort under sorrows and pains.
NOW let the Lord, my Saviour, smile,
And show my name upon his heart;
I would forget my pains a while,
And in the pleasure lose the smart.
2 But O! it swells my sorrows high,
To see my blessed Jesus frown:
My spirits sink, my comforts die,
And all the springs of life are down.
3Yet why, my soul, why these complaints?
Still while he frowns, his bowels move;
Still on his heart he bears his saints,
And feels their sorrows, and his love.
4 My name is printed on his breast;
His book of life contains my name :
I'd rather have it there impress'd,
Than in the bright records of fame.
When the last fire burns all things here,
se letters shall securely stand,

Who quench the coals of growing strife;
They shall be call'd the heirs of bliss,

The sons of God, the God of peace.
8 Blest are the sufferers, who partake
Of pain and shame for Jesus' sake;
Their souls shall triumph in the Lord;
Glory and joy are their reward.
