This is the only History of the English Bible, and of its progress in

England and Scotland; the author traces its course under extreme diffi-

This characteristic letter of the great philosopher was written during his self banishment from England, whence he fled with his patron, the Earl of Shaftesbury, in 1672, the latter doing so to avoid a state prosecution. He sends a transcript of his "Lamentation for Robert Emmett," "as the last poem of communicable length, which I have written, and also because of the subject." He relates an anecdote of Emmett's escape from Ireland during the Rebellion, "there is a strange warp in every Irishman's nature, they are all either wrong headed or wrong hearted, and the genius which they almost all possess serves only to render them more mischievous."
