CHAPTER XII.

Cure

Cure of a Leper - the Centurion's servant - Raising
of the Widow's Son Stilling of the Tempest
of the Demoniac of Gadara.

WHEN he was come down from the mounMk. tain, great multitudes followed him. And 40-45. there came a leper to him beseeching him, and

kneeling down to him, and saying unto him; "If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean." And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him; "I will; be thou clean." And as soon as he had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed. And he straightly charged him, and forthwith sent him away and saith unto him; "See thou say nothing to any man; but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing those things which Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them." But he went out, and began to publish it much, and to blaze abroad the matter, insomuch that Jesus could no more openly enter into the city; but was without in desert places, and they came to him from every quarter.

Mt.vill

And when Jesus was entered into Caper- M naum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him, and saying; "Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented."

And Jesus saith unto him; "I will come and heal him."

The centurion answered and said; "Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldst come under my roof; but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me; and I say to this man; 'Go,' and he goeth; unto another; 'Come,' and he cometh; and to my servant; 'Do this,' and he doeth it."

When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed; "Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. And I say unto you, that many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven. But the children of

the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

And Jesus said unto the centurion; "Go thy way, and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee."

And his servant was healed in the self-same hour.

And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people.

Mt.viii.

L. ix. 57-62

Now, when he came nigh to the gate of the
city, behold there was a dead man carried out,
the only son of his mother, and she was a
widow; and much people of the city was with
her. And when the Lord saw her, he had
compassion on her, and said unto her; "Weep
not."
And he came and touched the bier;
and they that bare him stood still. And he
said; "Young man, I say unto thee, arise."
And he that was dead sat up, and began to
speak; and he delivered him to his mother.
And there came a fear on all, and they glori-
fied God, saying; "That a great prophet is
risen up among us, and that God hath visited
his people." And this rumor of him went
forth throughout all Judea, and throughout all
the region round about.

Now when Jesus saw great multitudes about him, he gave commandment to depart unto the other side.

And it came to pass, that as they went in the way a certain man said unto him; "Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.'

And Jesus said unto him; "Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head." And he said unto another; " Follow me." But he said; "Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father."

Jesus said unto him; "Let the dead bury their dead; but go thou and preach the kingdom of God."

And another also said; "Lord, I will follow

thee; but let me first go bid them farewell which are at home at my house."

And Jesus said unto him; "No man having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God."

And when he had entered into a ship, his Mi disciples followed him. And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves; but he he was asleep. And the disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying; "Lord, save us, we perish."

And he saith unto them; "Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith?""

Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. But the men marvelled, saying; "What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him ?"

1-20.

And they came over unto the other side of Mk. the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes. And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, who had his dwelling among the tombs ; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains, because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces; neither could any man tame him; and always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones. But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran, and

worshipped him; and cried with a loud voice, and said; "What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not." (For he said unto him; "Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit.")

And he asked him; "What is thy name." And he answered, saying; "My name is Legion; for we are many.' And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country.

Now there was there, nigh unto the mountain, a great herd of swine feeding. And all the devils besought him, saying; "Send us into the swine that we may enter into them."

And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine; and the heard ran violently down a steep place into the sea; they were about two thousand; and were choked in the sea. And they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done. And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with a devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind; and they were afraid. And they that saw it told them how it befel to him that was possessed with the devil, and also concerning the swine. And they began to pray him to depart out of their coasts. And when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be
