"Christ shall rise first: then we which are alive "and remain shall be caught up together with "them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, " and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Where"fore comfort one another with these words."

DELIVERED AT THE GRAVE OF A MAN WHO DIED SUDDENLY.

BEHOLD, my dear fellow mortals, how the grim king of terrors again stares us in the face! Hark! the voice of the Eternal again pierces our trembling ear-it resounds from tomb to tomb→→ O man!" dust thou art, and to dust thou shalt "return."-The little space betwixt our feet and that grave is not more inconsiderable than the few fleeting moments which divide between us and eternity. The endearing ties of nature and blood, of sympathy, of humanity, of friendship, have brought us hither to day to perform their last sad duties; to pay in advance those offices of tenderness which shall, in our turn, be repaid to us by our surviving friends. You, my friends, who are acquainted with the distressing circumstances of this mournful event, and are interested in it, have that within you which will supply the place

of every monitor; your hearts will for many days address you in a language infinitely more forci ble than that of my tongue. As for you, who are strangers, if you possess the common feelings of humanity, surely it must be affecting, it must be alarming, to be told of one cut off in the very prime of life; torn from an affectionate consort, who was just ready to make him the glad father of another endearing pledge of conjugal love; from an infant race, to whom his life was of the utmost importance; from a society of relations and friends, to whom the most engaging qualities of a kind and benevolent heart, and of an open, frank, and generous disposition, had rendered justly dear. Cut off, without warning given, from well grounded reasonable hopes, and rational solid enjoyments. You hear of one, men and brethren, who, fourteen days ago, arose in as good health, and with as fair a prospect of long life and felicity, as the healthiest and happiest among you. But it has pleased Him who is the fountain of life, and the dread arbiter of death, to send his all-commanding summons, and to hurry him away—and nothing is left us but to mourn, to adore, to submit: to sympathize with, to comfort, to protect, and assist the widow and the orphan, and with all diligence, and earnestness, and anxiety, to prepare for our own latter end. Our

departed friend, whose ashes we here deposit, is now far beyond the praise and contempt of his fellow worms-and we humbly trust, through the mercy of God, and the merits of Jesus, has passed through death to life eternal. We shall go to him, but he cannot return to us. Let not, therefore, either the speaker or the hearers put this awful scene far from them, for I am speaking to those who, ere long, will hear that awful sentence: "To thee time shall be no more." Oh, my beloved friends, " there is no knowledge, nor

wisdom, nor device in the grave," to which we are fast hastening; "the night cometh when "no man can work," the earth will open her mouth to receive us, "the worm will feed sweetly

upon us," we shall be as though we had not been; we shall slumber in the dust, " careless of "the voice of the morning;" but we "know

that our Redeemer liveth, and that he shall "stand at the latter day upon the earth; and "though after our skin worms destroy these bo

dies, yet in our flesh we shall see God." Listen to the words of our all-gracious Saviour.

DELIVERED AT THE GRAVE OF A FRIEND.

THE voice of the Eternal saith, "Cry. What "shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the good"liness thereof is as the flower of the field." The voice from that tomb is loud and distinct, and quick and powerful: it says, in a language intelligible to all men, Vanity of vanities; all is vanity. It says, "O man! thou hast here no abiding city: "set thy desire on a better country, that is, an

heavenly. Be ye also ready, for ye know neither "the day nor the hour when the Son of man "cometh." Could the spirit of our departed friend return, and reanimate the clay tabernacle, and bring a report from the regions of eternal day, what would the testimony be? Once I reckoned, now I know, that the sufferings of time are not worthy to be compared with the glory to be revealed. Mourn not, my friends, for me; but mourn for yourselves, left as you are to struggle for a season through a valley of tears. Your kind wishes and prayers in my behalf are infinitely exceeded.

You wished me release from pain and suffering, and it is accomplished; I suffer no more, I am in pain no more. You wished me prolonged life in the waste howling wilderness which you inhabit, and lo, God has done inconceivably more and better for me--I now live, and enjoy life in the midst of the paradise of God. You wished me temporal comfort and prosperity; it was not the will of my heavenly Father that these should be mine any longer; but he has bestowed on me in exchange" a far more exceeding and eternal "weight of glory," which I would not re-exchange for all "the kingdoms of this world and the glory "of them." With sympathy and sorrow, such as immortals feel, my spirit looks down on the conflict which ye have still to endure, on the days of darkness which must still pass over you. But be not dismayed. "Be strong in the Lord, and the power of his might. Be faithful unto death, and ye shall receive a crown of life." Live the life of faith upon the Son of God, and your latter end shall be peace.

Listen, my christian friends, to the celestial monitor, and learn to live, learn to die. This awful spot acquires a growing interest with us every day. It is peopled with our kindred, our friends, with whom we took sweet counsel. They invite
