17. Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread, before the Evening which began the day on which the Paffover was to be eaten, the Disciples asked Jefus where he would have them make Provifion for their eating the Paffover; For they had not a House of their own in Jerufalem.

18. Jefus, to convince them at this time by an evident proof, that all the things he was to do and fuffer were according to Divine Foreknowledge and Appointment, bids them go into the City, and tells them where and with what Tokens they should find a Man, who at first asking would conduct them to a House fit for Jefus and his Difciples to keep the Passover in.

19. Accordingly the Difciples went into the City, and finding all Tokens anfwer exactly as Jefus had foretold, they made all things ready for his keeping the Paffover.

20. Things being thus prepared, Jefus came at Evening, and fat down to Supper with his Twelve Apoftles.

21. And as they were eating, Jefus knowing what things were ready to befal him, faid to them; Verily one of you Twelve fhall betray me into the Hands of them that feek my Life.

22. At this they were greatly amazed and troubled, knowing all, except Judas, their own Innocence; and defiring to clear themselves from fufpicion, they every one faid, Lord, I hope it is not 1, that fhall be guilty of fo horrid a Crime.

23. Jefus anfwered: One that fits very near me, and now eats out of the fame Difh with me, is the Person that will betray me.

the disciples came to

18 And he faid, Go into the city to fuch a man, and fay unto him, The Mafter faith, My time is at hand, I will keep the paffover at thy houfe with my dif ciples.

19 And the difciples did as Jefus had appointed them, and they made ready the paffover.

zo Now when the even was come, he fat down with the twelve.

21 And as they did eat, he faid, Verily I fay unto you, that one of you shall betray me.

22 And they were exceeding forrowful, and began every one of them to fay unto

him, Lord, is it I?

23 And he answered and faid, He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the fame fhall betray me.

25. Hereupon Judas, not at all terrified at thefe fevere Words of Chrift, but hardened now in his Wickedness, and as if he thought he could conceal his Defign, faid, Lord, is it I? Jefus anfwered; yea, you know it is fo

26. At the end of this Supper, Jefus took Bread in his Hands; and when he had given thanks, he brake it and diftributed it to his Difciples, faying, Take and eat this. For as the eating of the Paffover, was a perpetual Commemoration of the Deliverance of the Children of Ifrael out of Egypt; fo from henceforward your eating this Sacramental Bread, fhall be a Commemoration or Remembrance of my Death, and of my Body being broken for you.

27 & 28. In like manner, taking a Cup of Wine in his Hand, he gave

31. At this time Jefus forewarned his Difciples, that before Morning they would fall away from him, and be afraid to own him, because of the things which they should fee come upon him; fo that in them fhould be fulfilled that Prophecy of Zechary; (Zech. xiii. 7.) The Shepherd fhall be jmitten, and the Sheep Scattered.

33. Peter, troubled that Jefus fhould fpeak of their being afraid to own him, faid; Lord, I will never be afraid to own you; nay, though all your other Difciples fhould fall away from you, yet I never would.

After this, Jefus knowing that the hour of his laft Paffion approached, went with his Difciples into a place called Gethsemane; and there feparaples, Sit ye here, ting Peter, James and John, (that they who had feen his glorious Transfiguration in the Mount, might be Witneffes alfo of his lowest Humiliation and Paffion;) he bad the other eight fit down there and tarry, till he went a little further to Pray.

So that, what in St. Mark is before the Cock crow twice, Mar. xiv. 30. and in this place, before the Cock crow, or within the time of Cock-crowing; fignifies the fame thing, and is as much as if Chrift had faid, before three in the Morning.

Then leaving Them alfo behind him, he went on a little further, and proftrated himself upon the Ground, and prayed, faying; My Father, if in thy Infinite Wisdom thou faweft it fit, and that thy Glory and the Salvation of Men could be equally promoted, without my fuffering this cruel and ignominious Death, I could even defire that I might escape it: But this is only the first apprehenfion that Humane Nature has of Death; and I submit my felf wholly to thy Divine Will and Pleasure.

Be upon your Guard, and pray alfo to God for his Affiftance, that ye may be delivered from the danwhich is just ready to come upon ger you. Your Minds indeed I know are fincere, and willing to do your Duty; but ye have not attained fuch a strength and fteddinefs of Refolution, as to prevail over the natural Wants and Neceffities of the Body.
