there is one good Thing more, which you are not aware of, that this Woman has done for me: She has anointed my Body beforehand against the Burial, and been directed by Providence to do that to me yet alive, which fhe would have defired, and you would eafily have allowed her to have done to me when dead.

9. Affuredly I tell you, there is no Part of the World where my Hiftory fhall be related, and my Doctrine preached; but this Thing, which this Woman has now done, fhall be mentioned alfo, for the Commendation of her Piety, and the Remembrance of her Zeal.

10. At this Answer Judas was much offended: So that partly out of Difcontent, and partly through Covetoufnefs, he refolved to betray Jefus into the Hands of his Enemies; and accordingly he went foon after to the Chief Priefts, who he knew were confulting how to apprehend Jefus, and offered for a Sum of Money to deliver him into their Power.

11. This Offer thofe malicious Jews joyfully embraced; and they agreed with Judas for Thirty Pieces of Silver; and from that Inftant Judas waited only for a convenient Opportunity, to betray him privately into their Hands.

12. Now on the firft Day of unleavened Bread, before the Evening which began the Day wherein the Paffover was to be eaten, the Disciples asked Jefus, where he would have them make Preparation for his Eating the

Paffover.

13. Jefus faid, Go Two of you into the City, and as foon as ye are

unto them, Go ye
into the city, and
there fhall meet you
a man bearing a
pitcher of water :
follow him.
14 And wherefo-
ever he fhall go in,
fay ye to the good-
man of the house,
The mafter faith,
Where is the gueft-
chamber, where I
fhall eat the paffover
with my difciples?
15 And he will
fhew you a large up-
per room furnished
and prepared there
make ready for us.

16 And his dif-
ciples went forth,
and came into the
city, and found as
he had faid unto
them : and they
made ready the paf-
fover.
17 And in the

evening he cometh

with the twelve.

18 And as they fat, and did eat, Jefus faid, Verily I fay unto you, One of you which eateth with me shall betray

entred in, ye fhall fee a Man in the Street carrying a Pitcher of Water; follow him.

14. And when ye come to the Houfe where the Man goes in, go ye in to the Mafter of with him, and fay the House: Thus faith our Mafter; Where is the Guests Chamber, where I fhall eat the Paffover with my Difciples?

15. And the Providence of God will fo difpofe Things, that without any farther Inquiry the Man will immediately conduct you to a large upper Room ready-furnished; there prepare the Paffover againft our coming.

16. Accordingly Two of the Difciples, viz. Peter and John, went into the City, and found every Thing fucceed exactly as Jefus had foretold them; and they made all Things ready for his eating the Paffover.

17. And at Night Jefus came, and fat down with his Twelve Difciples.

18. And as they were eating, Jefus faid; Verily One of you Twelve,

even One that now eateth at the Table with me, will most ungratefully betray me into the Hands of Perfemy

fame Mefs, and dipping in the fame
Difh with me.

21. And I indeed must be deliver

ed over into the Power of wicked
Men, to be crucified and flain. For
thus God has decreed, and the Pro-
phets have foretold, that I should
fuffer and die for the Salvation of
Mankind. But woe be to that Man,
through whofe Perfidioufnefs I fhall
be betrayed to fuffer thefe Things.
For though the infinite Wisdom of Di-
vine Providence wonderfully over-
rules the malicious Actions of the
worst Men, to bring about wise, juft,
and good Defigns; yet the Baseness
and Treachery of thofe who do and
intend Evil, is not at all the lefs worthy
of Punishment. Wherefore dreadful
fhall be the Punishment of him that
betrays me; fo that it had been better
for him if he had never been born, or
had quickly perished by fome untimely
Death.

πεσθιόντων, 22. At the * Conclufion of the
may be the Supper, Jefus took Bread, and when
Aorift; he had given Thanks, he brake it, and
when they
gave it to his Difciples, faying; Take,
bad eaten. eat: And as the Paffover has been hi-
therto a perpetual Commemoration of
the Jews Deliverance out of Egypt;
fo from henceforward let your eating
this Sacramental Bread, be a continual
Remembrance of my Body being bro-
ken for you.

23. In like manner he took the
Cup; and when he had given Thanks,
he gave it to them, faying, Drink ye
all of this.

24. And let your drinking this Sacramental Wine, be from henceforward a perpetual Commemoration of

25 Verily I fay unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.

26 And when they had fung an hymn, they went out unto the mount of Olives.

27 And Jefus faith unto them, All ye fhall be offended because of me this night: for it is writ ten, I will fmite the fhepherd, and the fheep fhall be scattered.

my Blood fhed, and of the new Co-
venant of the Gospel thereby establish-
ed, for the Salvation of Sinners.

25. For after this, I will have the Jewish* Paffover no longer continued; Luke But the Things, of which That and xxii. 16. the like Inftitutions were only faint Reprefentations, fhall from this Time begin to be accomplished in the Kingdom of the Meffias.

26. Then, having fung an Hymn, according to the usual Custom; they rose up, and went out towards the Mount of Olives.

The

27. And as they were going, Je-
fus faid unto his Difciples:
and
Time of my Suffering is come;
ye will be fo afraid and difcouraged at
the Things which ye fhall fee befal
me, that this very Night ye fhall all
forfake me and flee; fo that this Pro-
phecy will exactly be accomplished
in me, (Zech. xiii. 7.) Smite the
Shepherd, and the Sheep shall be fcat-
tered.

28. But do not utterly defpair. For
though the Jews fhall prevail fo far, as
even to take away my
Life; yet I will
rife again from the Dead, and appear
to you in Galilee.

29. Hereupon Peter, full of Cou-
rage, and too confident of his own
Strength, replied: Lord, though all
the rest of your Difciples fhould be
afraid and forfake you, yet I never
would leave you in any Danger what-
foever.

30. Jefus faid; Are you fo confident, Peter? Verily I tell you, that even This Night, before † Three a Clock in the Morning, you will thrice deny that on Matt ever you knew me.

31. But the more Jefus forewarned him of his Weakness, with fo much the greater Eagernefs and Affurance did Peter again and again proteft, that nothing should ever make him afraid to own and confefs Jefus, no not though it should coft him his Life. And the fame alfo faid the reft of the Disciples.

3233. Now when they came to a Place called Gethsemane, at the Foot of the Mount of Olives, Jefus left Eight of his Difciples there, bidding them tarry till he came back. And going on a little further with only Peter, James and John; that they who had been Witneffes of his glorious Transfiguration, might be Witneffes alfo of his lowest Humiliation and Paffion; he began, in the Prefence of thefe Three Difciples, to be in a great Confternation and Anguish of Mind.

34. And he faid unto them; My Mind is in a great Agony, even like the Agony of Death: Tarry ye here and watch, while I retire a little to pray.

35. Then leaving thefe alfo behind him, he went on a little further alone; and kneeling down on the Ground, he prayed against his approaching Paffion and Death, faying:

36. O Almighty Father, if in thy infinite Wisdom thou faweft it fit, and that thy Glory and the Salvation of Men could be equally promoted without my Suffering this painful and ignominious Death, I could even defire that I might efcape it: But this is only the first Apprehenfion that Human Nature has of Death;
