CHAP. V.

3 Who are blessed. 13 The Apostles are the salt of the earth, and light of the world.

AND seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain; and, when he was set, his disciples1 came unto him:

2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,

3 Blessed are the poor in spirit ;2 for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.3 4 Blessed are they that mourn;4 for they shall be comforted.

5 Blessed are the meek ;5 for they shall inherit the earth.

6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness; for they shall be filled.

7 Blessed are the merciful; for they shall obtain mercy.

8 Blessed are the pure in heart; for they shall see God.

9 Blessed are the peace-makers; for they shall be called the children of God.

10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad for great is your reward in heaven;

16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law or the prophets; I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.6

18 For verily say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

19 Whosoever, therefore, shall break one of these least commandments,7 and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven; but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

21 ¶ Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and, whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment.8

6 To destroy the law, &c. Our Lord came not to abolish the moral law, but to fulfil it; be a Saviour to all who believe in him and and thereby to glorify himself, that he might obey his precepts. He came to redeem man from sin, that is, to enable man to repent and live well; and thus to inherit eternal life: but he did not come to provide any means for our being happy in the world to come without living well in this world.

7 Commandments, the precepts of the moral law.

8 Judgment, &c. To understand verses 21 and 22, it may be observed, that the Jews had which consisted of 23 men; the sentence of two courts; one common, called the judgment, this court on malefactors was strangling or beheading; the other was called the council or sanhedrim. This was the supreme court of the Jews; it consisted of 72 judges, by whom the highest crimes were tried, which this court, and this alone, punished with stoning; this, in their opinion, was a more terrible death than the former. The phrase hell-fire, at the close of verse 22, is not here supposed to refer primarily to the future punishment of the wicked; but to a punishment by death

28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her, hath committed adultery with her already his heart.

29 And if thy right eye offend thee,12 pluck it out, and cast it from thee; for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

still more awful than the other two, i. e. being burnt alive in the valley of Hinnom. This valley of Hinnom, or Tophet, is where MoLoch, the principal idol of the Ammonites was placed, in whose cruel worship children were burnt in sacrifice. Josiah destroyed this inhuman worship, or as it is said, 2 Kings xxiii. 10, he defiled Tophet, &c.; this he did by making it a receptacle for the filth of the city; to consume which, fires were kept continually burning. Hence it is a fit emblem to represent that future punishment of the wicked, mentioned in Mark ix. 43, &c.

9 Raca. A silly, foolish fellow. 10 Fool. An impious, profane person. 11 Ought against thee, reason of complaint. 12 Offend thee, be the occasion of thy sinning. The word offend in this case means to cause to offend.

The general meaning of verses 29 and 30, is, that we ought immediately to abandon every thing, however dear it may be to us, which

entices us to sin.

10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven: 11 Give us this day our daily bread, 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

13 And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil; For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

14 T For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:

15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

16 ¶ Moreover, when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance; for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily say unto you, They have their reward.

3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth;

19 T Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:

20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor

29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon, in all his glory, was not arrayed like one of these.

30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to-day is and to-morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O'ye of little faith?

Where should we lay up treasures!
What should we seek first?

CHAP. VII.

1 Jesus, ending his sermon on the mount, reproveth rash judgment, 6 forbiddeth to cast holy things to dogs, 7 exhorteth to prayer, 13 to enter in at the straight gate, 15 to beware of false prophets, 21 and not to be hearers only, but doers of the word. JUDGE not, that ye be not judged. 2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged; and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?

9 Or what man is there of you, whom, if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone?

10 Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?

11 If ye, then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?

12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them; for this is the law and the prophets.

13 Enter ye in at the strait gate; for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

14 Because straits is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

15 T Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.

18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit; neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
