Son; and Satan is not divided against himself. And sure I am that all who oppose heart-work are Satan's subjects; for the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power. And it is a truth from the mouth of truth, that "he who is not with me is against me, and he that gathereth not with me scattereth." His kingdom stands in power; that power searches our hearts, and makes us willing to choose him; it supports us in our sufferings, shields us in temptations, fortifies us against opposition, keeps us from black despair, raises hopes of better days; and keeps us seeking, watching, wrestling, waiting, crying, looking up and looking out, till the Beloved comes, leaping on the mountains, skipping on the hills.

discover our corruptions, and to convince us of the evil of them.

This, Becky, is the threefold cord which the world, the flesh, and the devil, labour so hard at; saying, "Let us break their bonds asunder, and cast away their cords from us." But a threefold cord cannot be broken; "this their way is their folly," and in this "the people imagine a vain thing, for he that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh, the Lord shall have them in derision; then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure. Yet have I set my King upon my holy hill of Zion." That holy hill is the souls and affections of his own people, and no other; for God says unto Zion, "Thou art my people." Isa. li. 16. In their souls, Paul says, God reveals his Son. "It pleased God to reveal his Son in me that I might preach him among the heathen." " "Believe," says Christ, "that I am in you, and you in me." Again, "The kingdom of God is within you." There is the kingdom, and there is the King. Oh! how few highflying professors know any thing of this! If they did, they would never oppose my poor island friends.

But there are two mystical kingdoms

February 8, 1813.

HAVE received a larger epistle than usual from my old friend, which persuades me that some additions have been communicated to her cruse, as life appears in the composition. I was glad that I had the opportunity of pumping thy well, as it seemed to flow freely. Divine "counsel in the heart is as deep waters, and a man of understanding will draw it out." And, when this well is cleared of its contents, it will spring more freely; the thoughts will be more consistent; hope will appear more conspicuous and more precious; and the heart will conceive a fresh and a more valuable treasure. It is a good thing to drain the heart, as it makes room for fresh communications from the fountain of life. "I will water them every moment; I will be as the dew unto Israel." And, though sometimes these refreshings are small, as the dew is, yet to the attentive soul they are perceptible, and discoverable in prayer, in meditation, and in hope and expectation.

And now, my old companion, take my

whenever God sends trouble or afflictions, it is to furnish us for confession and prayer: but revivals, refreshings, and enlargements, are to furnish us for praises, blessings, and thankofferings to God. What comes from him must lead us to him. The unwise in these matters, when they conceive a fulness, it is all spent upon some professor or professors, to gain applause, to get a name, and to excite wonder and admiration, which feeds the pride of the fleshly mind, and puffs it up; and those that applaud such are sure afterwards to see their dryness, barrenness, and beggary, and to think them of little note. They shall never enjoy the streams of this fountain, who wanton with them to appear great. If God fills my cruse, it is to fill the people; and private believers are to be thus fraught for the use of spiritual sacrifices. Do you observe these things, and read, watch, and meditate, for we often feel an

income this way. I do, and so will you.

I am glad you got home safe. My hand shakes sadly, yesterday being a hard day for me. Tender my kind love to granny and the young men. Dame sends her love with your old friend,
