Being now come to the Mount, and feated over against the Temple, Peter and Andrew, John and James ask'd him privately concerning that Prediction of his, defiring him to inform 'em when the Temple should be deftroyed, and what would be the Signs of its approaching Ruin, the rather because they thought it was to be at his coming to judg the Good and Bad, and to inflict the Punishments on the latter which they deferv'd. Jefus anfwer'd both their Inquiries, by flowing firft, what were the Signs that would immediatly precede the Deftruction of Ferufalem. Let no one, faid he, deceive you by vain Promifes; for many Impoftors fhall arife, pretending to be the Meffiah and Saviour of the Jews: Be not mifled by thefe, whatever their pretences are. There shall be Signs alfo from Heaven, which will create no fmall terror; but all these things, however lamentable and dreadful, will be but the beginning of Sorrows. Take care in the mean time not to do any thing unworthy of my Difciples. But before these things come to pafs, you fhall be taken and cruelly perfecuted; you thall be hurried to Tribunals, and impriíon'd, that you may be brought before Rulers and Kings, who shall condemn you to be fcourg'd and put to death. For all Nations, not only fews but Gentiles allo, hall hate you for your profeffion of being my Difciples. Now this shall befal you, that you may bear an unanswerable Teftimony to my Doctrin before all people, to whom God will have the Gofpel preach'd before the final LII 2 De Deftruction of Ferufalem. Mean while, many falfe Prophets fhall arife, and feduce many, and as the violence of the Perfecution increafes, the conftancy of many fhall fail, infomuch that they will bafely forfake their dearest Friends, who run the hazard of their Lives for the Gospel's fake, to fecure themfelves from the like danger.
