Nferted above at p. 231. it expresses to deliver, there from the Womb, here from Enemies or Dangers in this World, or the next: So the Deliverer, the Giver of Means to escape. Their Aleim might give them Strength to make their efcape, or be dark and fo affift their Escape; all the reft was Imagination. This is reclaim'd, and attributed ftrongly, 2 Sam. xxii. 1, David fpake unto Jehovah the Words of this Song in the Day Jehovah deliver'd him out of the hand of all his Enemies, and out of the hand of Saul. Ver. 24, Thou alfo haft delivered me from the Strivings of my People. 2 Chron. xii. 7, I will grant them fome Deliverance. PL xvii. 13, Deliver my Soul from the Wicked, which is thy Sword. Ention'd, Jof. xix. 21, I find no Root with the doubled. But in Hebrew that has been judg'd to augment the Force of the Word; 'tis from 5 to open, make Way or Paffage for any Thing; fo a Paffage out of Mifery or Slavery; fo a Redeemer: This was out of the Power of their Aleim; fo all Imagination. ever,

ever, there are a few Claims under this Word, Pfal. cxliv. 7, Send thine Hand from above, rid me, and deliver me out of great Waters: From the Hand of Strange Children. Ver. 10, It is he that giveth Salvation unto Kings: Who delivereth David his Servant from the hurtful Sword. Rid me, and deliver me from the Hand of Strange Children, whose Mouth fpeaketh Vanity, and their Right Hand is a Right Hand of Falfhood.

Ention'd Hof. x. 14. Tis compounded of 8 and 8 God, the Irradiator. The Word 8 fignifies to be hid with Defign and Power to destroy, Prov. xxiii. 28, She alfo lyeth in wait as for a Prey (as a Robber). Ib. i. 11, Come with us: Let us lay wait for Blood. Fof. viii. 2, Lay thee an Ambush for the City behind it. Prov. xxiv. 15, Lay not wait, O wicked Man, against the Dwelling of the Righteous. Pfal. x. 9, He lieth in wait fecretly, as a Lion in his Den. So for the Places of lying in wait, Job xxxvii. 8, Then the Beasts go into Dens, and remain in their Places. Ib. xxxviii. 40, When

When they couch in their Dens, and abide in the Covert, to lie in wait. 'Tis alfo

used for Locufts, as fuiting their Condition and Action; and for the Cataracts of Heaven, as they conftrue them: That is the Paffages, the fmall Cracks through the Strata of the Shell of the Earth for the Airand Water; the Places of Circulation into or out of the Great Deep, where thefe Agents lay hid which once deftroy'd Mankind. Whence fometimes are emitted Vapours, as Blaftings, Mildews, Peftilence,

c. which deftroy Fruits, Creatures, and Men. So in their Imagination was the Agent with Power, which could employ, withold, or over-dule all fecret Enemies, or deliver from them. As this was onc of their malignant Powers which they deprecated: There can be no Claims under this Word as an Attribute of God. One Inftance of God's Power over these was, by bringing the Flood; another, by bringing the Locusts in Egypt; another, by bringing the Peftilence there. So in Success to thofe he appointed to lie in wait in Joshua's Wars. Deut. xxviii. 22, Jehovah shall fmite thee and with Blaftings, and with Mildew. So Pfal. xci. 5, Thou shalt not be afraid for the Terrour by Night: Nor for the Arrow that flieth by Day; nor

for the Peftilence that walketh in Darknefs: Nor for the Deftruction that waßeth at noon Day. Ezek. xiv. 19, If I fend Peftilence into that Land. 'Tis likely this is one of the Deities they worshipp'd in Caves; there were feveral Cities, and one Place call'd by this Name.

Xplain'd in M-Sine P. p. 138, &c. The Word fignifies to make afraid ; as Deut. xxxii. 17, They facrificed-to Aleim whom your Fathers feared not. The Things which made them afraid, exprefs'd by this Word, were Whirlwinds, Storms, Tempefts, Lightenings, &c. So the Agent with Powers which could produce, and inflict, or reftrain them. For the fame Reason as in the laft, there can be no claim under this Word as an Attribute: But his Dominion over them is defcribed and attributed properly, Pfal. 1. 3, Our Aleim fhall come, and shall not keep Silence: A Fire fhall devour before him, and it fhall be very tempestuous round about him. Ib. lviii. 9, He shall take them away as with a Whirlwind. Ifai. xxviii. z, Behold, Jehovah hath a mighty and strong
