excellence of human nature. Grant that the pleasures and indulgences of this world may not tempt or allure me to abandon the more substantial enjoyments of temperance, industry, and frugality. Guide me, O Lord, in the paths of piety and virtue; and let me not incur the punishment, or entail on myself the fruits of vicious and intemperate habits; for then I should be unhappy indeed, because there is no misery like that which a man incurs by his own vices.* Mercifully grant, that I may grow wiser and better as life wears away; and though occupied, like others, in the cares and business of this life, let me often think of futurity; of "the things which belong to my peace, before

in thy great mercy, and according to thy divine will, give me time and opportunity to "amend my ways," before it be too latebefore I am laid in the cold and silent grave, where there is "no work, nor device, nor repentance." Help me to acquire and preserve an even and cheerful temper, a liberal and charitable disposition, and a sound and upright mind. “Let my light so shine before men, that they may see my good works, and glorify thee, my heavenly Father, who art in Heaven."

Enable me, O Lord, by thy grace, to submit unreluctantly to all thy dispensations, and never murmur when difficulties, trials, or afflictions are put upon me; knowing, "that all things work together for good to

them that love thee;" and that "our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory."

Fix, O God, these considerations in my mind, and let them sink deep into my heart; let me remember that I must die (thou only knowest how soon, or how late), and appear" before the judgment seat of Christ." O that I may ever be serious and circumspect in a matter of so great importance to my everlasting interests! When, therefore, thou shalt be pleased to call me out of this world, let me depart in peace, without pain of body or agony of mind, without sorrow and fear, and have "a desire to be with Christ, which is far better." Grant this, O merciful and eternal God, for his sake, and through his merits and intercession; in whose
