(2) This Verfe will be more clear, if we read, as fome do, both Parts of the Verfe by way of Queftion. Do ye think that the Scripture Speaks in vain, when it fo often reprefents fuch Friendship with the World as Enmity with God? Or, Does the Spirit which dwelleth in us, if we be truly Friends of God, Luft, cr ftir us up to envy the worldly Dominion and Pleasure of others?

(2) The Word Grace occurring often in the Old and New-Teftament, it may be of ufe to fet down fome of the moft common Acceptations of it. First, The ftri&t and primary_ Senfe of it is, Favour, or, Free-bounty and Mercy, Gen. 6. 8. Luk. 1.30. Eph. 1.7. Eph. 5. 24. See the References on Rom. 1. 7. and on Rom. 16. 20. Secondly, Grace ftands for the inward Operations of the Holy Spirit upon our Minds, inclining our Wills, helping our Infirmities, and affifting us in our Duty, 2 Cor. 1. 12. 1 Cor. 15. 10. 2 Cor. 12.9. For I cannot think that thefe Places are to be reftrained to the miraculous Gifts of the Spirit. In the latter place efpecially, the Temptation the Apoftle was under, and his praying thrice for the removal of it, fhew that it ought not to be confined to that Senfe only. Thirdly, The Word Grace is put for the Gofpel, or the Religion taught and delivered to us in the New-Teftament, As 20. 24. Heb. 13.9. 1 Pet 5, 12. Jude Ver. 4. Fourthly, It is put for

And this, fays he, according to the several Uses and Ocafions of it, is by Divines called by feveral Names. As it puts good Motions into us, and excites and ftirs us up to that which is good, 'tis alled, preventing Grace; because it prevents any Motion or Defire on Our Parts: as it affifts and ftrengthens us in the doing of any thing hat is good, it is called affifting Grace: as it keeps us conftant in a good Courfe, it is called perfevering Grace and may have feveral other Denominations, in feveral other refpects; for it is fuited to all our Oc cafions and Neceffities.
