3 Assure my conscience of her part
In the Redeemer's blood;

And bear Thy witness with my heart
That I am born of God.

4 Thou art the earnest of His love,
The pledge of joys to come:
And Thy soft wings, celestial Dove!
Will safe convey me home.

307 I will pour out my Spirit upon all

10

flesh.-Joel 2, 28.

SPIRIT of the living God,

In all Thy plenitude of grace, Where'er the foot of man hath trod, Descend on our apostate race.

2 Give tongues of fire and hearts of love To preach the reconciling word;

Give power and unction from above, Whene'er the joyful sound is heard. 3 Be darkness, at Thy coming, light; Confusion, order in Thy path;

Souls without strength inspire with might,

Bid mercy triumph over wrath. 4 O Spirit of the Lord! prepare

All the round earth her God to meet; Breathe Thou abroad, like morning air, Till hearts of stone begin to beat.

5 Baptize the nations; far and nigh The triumphs of the cross record; The name of Jesus glorify,

Till every kindred call Him Lord. 6 God from eternity hath willed All flesh shall His salvation see; So be the Father's love fulfilled, The Saviour's sufferings crowned through Thee.

308 Behold, I make all things 'new.—

1

Rev. 21, 5.

SPIRIT of power and might, behold A world by sin destroyed;

Creator-Spirit, as of old,

Move on the formless void.

2 Give Thou the word-that healing Shall quell the deadly strife, [sound And earth again, like Eden crowned, Produce the tree of life.

3 If sang the morning stars for joy,
When nature rose to view,

What strains will angels' harps employ
When Thou shalt all renew!

4 And if the sons of God rejoice
To hear a Saviour's name,

How will the ransomed raise their voice, To whom that Saviour came! 5 So every kindred, tongue, and tribe, Assembling round the throne, Thy new creation shall ascribe To sovereign love alone.

309 The Spirit of glory and of God

SPIRIT

resteth upon you.-1 Peter 4, 14. PIRIT of mercy, truth, and love! O shed Thy influence from above, And still from age to age inspire Thy church with Pentecostal fire. 2 In every clime, by every tongue, Be God's amazing glory sung,

Let all the listening earth be taught The acts our great Redeemer wrought. 3 Unfailing Comfort! heavenly Guide! Still o'er Thy favoured church preside Still may mankind Thy blessings prove Spirit of mercy, truth, and love!

THE HOLY TRINITY.

310 To God only wise, be glory... for

1

ever.-Rom. 16, 27.

WE E give immortal praise

To God the Father's love,

For all our comforts here

And better hopes above:

He sent His own eternal Son

To die for sins that man had done.

N

[merged small][ocr errors][merged small]

To God the Son belongs

Immortal glory too,

Who bought us with His blood
From everlasting woe:

And now on high He lives and reigns,
And sees the fruit of all His pains.

To God the Spirit's name

Immortal worship give,

Whose new creating power

Makes the dead sinner live:

His work completes the great design,
And fills the soul with joy divine.

Almighty God! to Thee

Be endless honours done,
The undivided Three,/

And the mysterious One:

Where reason fails with all her powers, There faith prevails and love adores.

311 There are Three that bear record

in heaven.-1 John 5, 7.

FATHER of heaven! whose love pro

A ransom for our souls hath found: Before Thy throne we sinners bend: To us Thy pardoning love extend. 2 Almighty Son! Incarnate Word! Our Prophet, Priest, Redeemer, Lord! Before Thy throne we sinners bend: To us Thy saving grace extend. 3 Eternal Spirit! by whose breath The soul is raised from sin and death; Before Thy throne we sinners bend: To us Thy quickening power extend. 4 Jehovah! Father, Spirit, Son! Mysterious Godhead! Three in One! Before Thy throne we sinners bend: Grace, pardon, life to us extend!

312 The Lord which is, and which was,

and which is to come.-Rev. 1, S.

Met all that live adore,

AKER, Upholder, Ruler! Thee

Who art, and wast, and art to be,
God blessed evermore.

2 Redeemer, Prophet, Priest, and King! Appointed Judge of all!

Let ransomed souls Thy triumphs sing,
Thy foes before Thee fall.

Spirit of life, and light, and love!
Thy glorious gifts impart :

From heaven descending like a dove,
Dwell Thou in every heart.

4 Thee, Father, Son, and Spirit! Thee
Let heaven and earth adore,

Thou art, Thou wast, and Thou shalt be
God blessed evermore.

78.

313 Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Al

mighty.-Rev. 4, 8.

1 Hood of Hosts, when heaven and

OLY, Holy, Holy Lord

earth

Out of darkness, at Thy word,
Issued into glorious birth:

All Thy works around Thee stood,
And Thine eye beheld them good,
While they sang with sweet accord,
Holy. Holy, Holy Lord!

2 Holy, Holy, Holy !-Thee,
One Jehovah evermore,

Father, Son, and Spirit, we,

Dust and ashes, would adore;

Lightly by the world esteemed,

From that world by Thee redeemed,
Sing we here with glad accord,
Holy, Holy, Holy Lord!

3 Holy, Holy, Holy !-All

Heaven's triumphant choir shall sing,
While the ransomed nations fall
At the footstool of their King:
Then shall saints and seraphim,
Harps and voices, swell one hymn,
Blending in sublime accord,
Holy, Holy, Holy Lord!

P.M.

314 Which was, and is, and is to

come.-Rev. 4, 8.

1H Gratefully adoring, our songs shall

OLY,Holy Holy! Lord God Almighty!

rise to Thee,

Holy, Holy, Holy! Merciful and Mighty, God in Three Persons, Blessed Trinity. 2 Holy, Holy, Holy! all the saints adore Thee, Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;

Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee,

Who wast, and art, and evermore shalt be.

8 Holy, Holy, Holy! though the darkness hide Thee,

Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see;

Only Thou art holy: there is none beside Thee

Perfect in power, in love, and purity. 4 Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty! All Thy works shall praise Thy name, in earth, and sky, and sea:

Holy, Holy, Holy! Merciful and Mighty!
God in Three Persons, Blessed Trinity!

315 They sung as it were a new song

1

NOW

before the throne.-Rev. 14, 3.

TOW with angels round the throne,
Cherubim and seraphim,

And the church, which still is one,
Let us swell the solemn hymn:
Glory to the great I AM :

Glory to the Victim Lamb.

2 Blessing, honour, glory, might,
And dominion infinite,

To the Father of our Lord,
To the Spirit and the Word;
As it was all worlds before,
Is, and shall be evermore.

316 We will come unto him and make

our abode with him.-John 14, 2. OLY Father! hear my cry,

[ocr errors]

Holy Saviour! bend Thine ear,

Holy Spirit! come Thou nigh-
Father, Saviour, Spirit hear!
