way that He would so show you the solemn realities of death, judgment, and eternitythat He would so show you your utter insufficiency either to will or to do that you might this day strive to enter into the way which His eternal wisdom has opened up through Christ to the praise of His glory. If you had obedience to God as the regulating habit of your soul, you would soon be delivered from perplexity as you went forward in the spirit of little children towards the new and living way, difficulties would vanish before you, and you would be satisfied with the perfection of the system and the purity and pleasantness of the way. Not daring to cavil in God's presence, in which you would feel yourselves to be, you would ask, Lord! what wilt Thou have us to do?"* "What shall we do that we might work the works of God?" And you would receive the short and simple but comprehensive answer, "This is the work of God, that ye believe on Him whom He hath sent."t
