of fire. But unto the Son he faith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever, a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of thy kingdom. Thou haft loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning haft laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands. They fhall perish, but thou remaineft; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment; and as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed; but thou art the same, and thy years fhall not fail.

The Gospel. S. John 1. 1.

N the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The fame was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him, and without him was not any thing made, that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehendeth it not. There was

a man sent from God, whose name was John. The fame came for a witness, to bear witnefs of the light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that light, but was sent to bear witness of that light. That was the true light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the Sons of God, even to them that believe on his Name: which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will

In the beginning was the Word, &c. The three fir Verfes of this Gospel are fuch an evident proof of our Saviour's Divinity, that the moft fubtle argumentation can hardly evade it. But what is too hard for prejudice and prepofleffion!

And the light fineth in Darkness, &c. Christ was a Light to ighten Mankind, who were in the Darknefs of Sin and Ignorance, with the Knowledge

of the Gospel. But that very Ignorance and Wickednefs which rendered fuch a Revelation neceffary, is the .unhappy caufe why to many have rejected it. Let us take heed therefore that we be not like thofe of whom St. Paul faith, the God of this World hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, left the glor ous Gopel of Chrift, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. 2 Cor. 4. 4.

The Collect.

Rant, O Lord, that in all our fufferings here upon earth, for the teftimony of thy truth, we may ftedfaftly look up to heaven, and by faith behold the glory that fhall be revealed; and being filled with the holy Ghoft, may learn to love and blefs our perfecutors by the example of thy first Martyr Saint Stephen, who prayed for his murderers to thee, O bleffed Jefus, who ftandeft at the right hand of God, to fuccour all thofe that fuffer for thee, our only Mediator and Advocate. Amen. Then shall follow the Collect for the Nativity, which shall be faid continually unto New-years Eve.

The Gospel. St. Matth. 23. 34.

Ehold, I send unto you prophets, and wife men, and scribes; and fome of them ye shall kill and crucify ; and some of them fhall ye fcourge in your fynagogues, and perfecute them from city to city; that upon you may come all the righteous blood fhed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel, unto the blood of Zacharias, fon of Barachias, whom ye flew between the temple and the altar. Verily I fay unto you, + All these things shall come upon this generation. § O Jerufalem, Jerufalem, thou that killeft the Prophets, and ftoneft them which are fent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! Behold, your house is left unto you defolate. For I fay unto you, Ye fhall not fee me henceforth, till ye shall fay, Bleffed is he that cometh in the Name of the Lord.

That which we have seen and heard, declare we unto you, that ye alfo may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jefus Chrift. And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full. This then is the meffage which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, thatGod is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we fay that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: but ‡ if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jefus Chrift his Son cleanseth us from all fin. This is the disciple which teftifieth of these things, and wrote these things, and we know that his teftimony is true. + And there are also many other things which Jefus did, the which if they should be written every one, I fuppofe, that even the World itself could not contain the books that should be written.

Notwithtanding the care which the Apoftle took to prevent any mistakes in this refpect, yet fome have invented a fabulous Story that he did not die, but was tranflated like Enoch, or Elias. But what our Saviour faid concerning his tarrying till he came, was fufficiently fulfil led, in that he permitted him to live till he came to take vengeance upon the Jews by the destruction of Jerufalem.
