tion, psalms, a lesson from Scripture, and fourteen prayers; of which seven are long, taken for the most part from the ancient offices of the Eastern Church, seven short, being for the most part Western Collects: so that he who prayeth may, if he desire it, use a different prayer each day of the week, either of the longer or of the shorter kind, as he findeth most edifying to his soul. Each Office endeth with a blessing, to which is prefixed intercessory prayer, and a thanksgiving. Additional prayers suited for use at any hour are also herein provided. But, for as much as many devout Christians, by reason of the duties of their calling, are unable thus to observe the seven hours, using solemn prayer but twice a day, that is to say morning and evening: and yet may wish to offer up to God from time to time all the Offices contained in this book, it is to be noted that such persons can conveniently do so, by using generally II. in the morning and VII. at night; substituting for these on Sunday evening III.; on Tuesday evening VI.; on Thursday morning IV.; on Friday morning and evening V.; on Saturday evening I. Those who pray three times daily, should use at noon the Office appointed for that hour, IV.; and on Thursday morning II. And if any desire to shorten these Offices, it may best be done by omitting one or more of the portions following: that is to say, firstly, the Meditation; secondly, the Hymn: thirdly the Intercessory prayer; fourthly, the Thanksgiving; fifthly, the Psalm, Lesson, and Canticle. At the end of the book will be found suitable Offices for such as desire to use the prayers in this book for family worship.
