THE UNITED STATES.

""Kate Felton," "Elfie Grafton," &c. &c. &c.

BOSTON:

PUBLISHED BY EDWARD PAYSON WESTON,
FOR SALE BY CROCKER AND BREWSTER,

1866.

Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1865, by

MRS. MARIA WESTON,

In the Clerk's Office of the District Court of Massachusetts.

[blocks in formation]

TO THE PATRONS OF THIS WORK.

THE AUTHOR

RESPECTFULLY INSCRIBES IT.

SHE does so, with the hope that it may be read with interest and profit by such as sympathize with her in loving the dear old "Stars and Stripes." A deep-plotted romance need not be expected; therefore, such as are looking for a number one novel will be disappointed. The work is calculated to exhibit life as it was in our country during the late Rebellion. We have used fictitious names in stating facts, and have endeavored to write so as to avoid giving offence to any who may recognize incidents in which their words and act have been given to the public.

The author loves her country, a united North and South; such she would ever have it, by the blessing of God.

PROVIDENCE, OCTOBER 1, 1865.
