difcourfes, which I am perfuaded will raise fuch an opinion of Mr. Abernethy in the dif cerning and judicious, as will convince them, that this essay, intended as a piece of just reSpect to his memory, is far from flattering it ; a thing to which indeed there could be no temptation, when it is real perplexity how to give the reader a just notion of his true worth ; which the author can honeftly declare is the cafe; and is fully perfuaded that fuch as were intimately acquainted with him, have a far higher Idea of his character, than this representation of it can poffibly raise in ethers.

CON

is the end of all men, and the living will lay it to his heart. Sorrow is better than laughter, for by the fadness of the countenance the heart is made better. The heart of the wife is in the boufe of mourning, but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.
