PREFACE. So few persons read a preface, and so few care about it, that I shall make the present one as brief as possible. I do not know that I have passed over many of the more prominently important passages of that part of the sacred volume of which I have treated, or the real difficulties connected with them, as they occurred to my own mind. I have not, however, thought it necessary to give a separate exposition of texts, which, though important enough to demand it of themselves, have been interwoven with others in the course of the argument, and have thus had a definite sense assigned them. I am not sanguine enough to suppose that the views which are put forward will meet the appro bation of those who have been habituated to extreme opinions. Nor am I presumptuous enough to think |
