8vo. 5.75 x 9.75 inches. [1] + xii + 13-102, 113-321, 326-379 pp. + [1]. Pagination and register irregular as normal in this work but text is complete. Advertisement for this book complete or in four parts at beginning. Letter I dated 1814 and Letter II dated 1817, with a concluding section on the Peace of 1814. Bound in original boards rebacked, with modern printed label. Deckled edges. Extremities worn and spine covering eroded at lower edge. Edges darkened and some browning and foxing but otherwise in good condition. A sometimes anecdotal account of the principles and practice of Quakerism, well buttressed by biblical and other quotations. The author examines issues of concern to Quakers, including tithes, fashion, carriages, 'On bowing the knee, and uncovering the head,' education, corporal punishment, the theatre, the Sabbath, shopkeeping, the names of days of the week, banks, alehouses and voting, etc. An account of a morning walk and the view 'across the beautiful and grand river Mersey,' to the Cheshire hills and Welsh mountains beyond, leads to a long digression on the poems of Ossian. The final section was inspired by the arrival of news of the peace negotiations of 1814, a section which the author has updated in a footnote. This work, as the publisher's advertisement at the front indicates, was originally printed in four parts (two for each letter) and these could be purchased separately. Although the title page for this one volume edition is dated 1815, the end of Letter II is signed and dated 1817. As well as the dating, the pagination (as noted above) and register of copies of this work also display several irregularities. COPAC notes only four copies in UK libraries (British Library, Oxford, Leeds and Glasgow) of this scarce work. ART REFERENCE QUAKERS CHRISTIAN 19TH CENTURY ART REFERENCE.
