Brunet 479. Allibone 1554). Pennant, naturalist, traveller, and writer. Two of the three publications written towards the end of Pennant's life exemplify both his energy and the range of his writings. The History of the Parishes of Whiteford and Holywell (1796) offers a detailed local history and genealogical information on the Pennant family. His Outlines of the Globe, published in four volumes between 1798 and 1800 with volumes three and four being produced by his son David, was the only published outcome of twenty-two manuscript volumes of imaginary travels throughout the world. The title of the third, The Literary Life of the Late Thomas Pennant Esq., by himself (1793), hints at Pennant's sense of humour. See ODNB.

Full Leather. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 4to (245 x 190 mm.): [8], 328 p., engraved t.p. (with vignette of Bychton) and 22 numbered plates (engraved primarily by J. Barlow, a few by W. Angus). BINDING/CONDITION: Bound in contemporary calf, sprinkled edges, raised bands, red morocco titling piece; engraved armorial bookplate ("Sir William Forbes Bart. of Pitsligo" and motto "Nec timide nec temere") on inside front board; binding slightly rubbed. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION OF PENNANT'S HISTORY OF HIS LOCAL PARISHES, CONTAINING VALUABLE AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION. Pennant's topographical and geographical works influenced many of his contemporaries, including Samuel Johnson. Carl Linnaeus was so thoroughly impressed by Pennant's early works on natural history that he nominated him to the Royal Swedish Society of Sciences; he was duly elected in 1757. After a string of influential and successful publications, including A Tour in Scotland in 1769 (1771), Of London (1790-1791), and Arctic Zoology (1784 1787), Pennant turned to the districts in which he resided, authoring a detailed history of Whiteford, Holywell, and the Pennant family. In 1797 the influential Gentleman's Magazine reviewed the work, commenting on Pennant's claim in his preface--"Resurgam," Latin for "I shall rise"--to have returned from the dead, having prematurely announced the end of his literary career in 1791. The long, rather satirical notice concludes with an unequivocal thumbs-up: "This work is a valuable addition to British topography." PROVENANCE: From the library of Sir William Forbes (1739-1806), 6th Baronet of Monymusk and Pitsligo. Forbes was a Scottish banker, philanthropist, writer, founding member of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland and the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and occasional participant in Samuel Johnson's literary dining club. In his Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides (1785), James Boswell described Forbes as "a man of whom too much good cannot be said; who, with distinguished abilities and application in his profession of a banker, is at once a good companion, and a good Christian; which I think is saying enough."
