Loading... The Essentials of Prayer (original 1925; edition 2013)by E. M. Bounds (Author)This book wasn't what I expected. It would be more aptly titled "why a Christian ought to pray" instead of "how". Bounds shows how prayer is intertwined with many other aspects of life (trials, tribulation, thanksgiving, humility, works of God, missions, sanctification, etc) and how important our prayer life is in all these areas (how they build each other up). However, there is very little practical application or advise. It is still a decent read; interesting and still quite relevant for today, even if I don't agree with 100% of his theology. This was a great book on prayer! As the Preface to the book states: "For almost a century E. M. Bounds's books on prayer have been classic works, stimulating and inspiring Christians to become prayer warriors." This work truly does "call today's Christians to higher discipleship and an energetic prayer life". Although this was originally published in 1925, you would think he is talking to us today. He was a godly man "who lived to pray and write about prayer". Some of the chapter titles are: Prayer and Humility, Prayer Praise, and Thanksgiving, Prayer and Trouble, Prayer Born of Compassion, Prayer and Missions. This one is a keeper that I need to regularly read again. There is a "The Complete Works of E.M. Bounds on Prayer" which is worth looking into after reading this individual edition. |
